The
Prompter
tion. The unalterablemuteness of the figures tells us
that there is nomessage.
There is an impossible triumphing element in
Muñoz’s work: speech. The impossibility of speech
informs of the impossibility of communication. In
his work, alterity gives way to existential isola-
tion. No-one knows anything about anyone. And
this is a blow against the other plane because it
places the impossible and the absurd as meeting
points of the communities.
This canbe seenclearly in thepiece
ThePrompter
(1988). It shows a theater stage and a dwarf
occupying the place of the prompter, but the only act
that appears in this bizarre scene is the absurdity of
remembering and memorizing the script of a scene
that represents nothing. The artist places a drum on
the stage to emphasize the infertile character of the
issuer-message-receiver triad. The largest equivoca-
tion: amutemusical instrument.
Juan Muñoz plays with reality like a magician
who pulls a dove out if a bag, but instead shows us
an empty hand. The game of the double, the other,
the shadows and the mirror unsettles and amazes
us because his work become opaque surfaces that
do not reflect. Juan Muñoz, the magician stam-
mers: alterity is just an illusion.
