Buceo en cenotes místicos
Diving in Mystical Cenotes
E
ven though the exploration of Yucatan’s caves
and cenotes (sinkholes) dates back to the last
century, it wasn’t until recently that this activ-
ity could be done efficiently. This new development is
the result of the invention of sophisticated diving
equipment that allows divers to spend longer periods
under water.
Some 20 years ago, cave diving, previously an
unknown, mysterious activity, became a lucrative,
highly specialized activity of the diving world.
Diving in sinkholes is very technical, so experi-
ence, training, education and the right equipment are
a must for this adventure. When any of the aforemen-
tioned elements is missing the sport becomes
extremely dangerous.
The word “cenote” comes from the Maya
dzonot,
which means “sacred hole”. They are subterranean
rivers that emerge as small lakes or springs in some
places on the Yucatán Peninsula. The ancient Maya
utilized them in their everyday life as all their settle-
ments were established near these bodies of water.
They used them as sources of water as well as for cer-
emonial purposes. They also threw their sick and
dead into the cenotes because our ancestors believed

fechas recientes en que es posible realizar adecuada-
mente esta actividad. Esto es así gracias a la invención de
equipos sofisticados de buceo, que nos permiten tener una
estancia más prolongada bajo el agua.
Hace aproximadamente 20 años que el buceo en cuevas
pasó de ser una actividad desconocida y misteriosa a ser una
actividad lucrativa y altamente especializada en el mundo
del buceo. El buceo en cenotes es muy técnico, y tanto la ex-
periencia, el entrenamiento y la educación, así como el equi-
po adecuado, son prerrequisitos indispensables para poder
emprender esa aventura. Cuando no existe alguno de estos
aspectos mencionados esta actividad deportiva se vuelve
extremadamente peligrosa.
La palabra “cenote” proviene del maya,
dzonot,
que sig-
nifica hoyo sagrado. Son ríos subterráneos, que en algunos
lugares de la Península de Yucatán emergen como pequeñas
lagunas o fuentes de aguas. Fueron usadas por los antiguos
mayas para su vida diaria, pues todos sus asentamientos es-
tán edificados en las cercanías de cuerpos de agua de este ti-
po. Los utilizaron como simples tomas de agua, pero también
para fines ceremoniales, y para arrojar a sus enfermos o a sus
muertos, pues nuestros antepasados creían que eran las
