na de las regatas de larga distancia más im-
portante en el mundo (realizada durante 63
años consecutivos), es la que se lleva a cabo
en las costas de Sydney, Australia.
Esta prueba de 628 millas de recorrido, es uno de
los íconos deportivos más importantes en el verano
australiano, el cual ha alcanzado un ranking de públi-
co igualable a eventos como el “Australian Open”, ya
que ninguna otra prueba náutica alcanza los puntos
de cobertura como cada 26 de diciembre en Sydney,
con la “Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race”.
La prueba está considerada en el deporte de las
velas como un extremo test de navegación, ya que
las condiciones meteorológicas que esta prueba
reúne son muy complicadas hacia el sur, Mar de Tas-
mania, y atravesando el Estrecho de Bass.
Lo importante en esta prueba es dar a notar la ha-
bilidad que tiene el clima de cambiar repentinamente a
condiciones muy duras y peligrosas, de un momento a
otro, sin dar aviso alguno. Haymuchos casos dentro de
esta regata, en donde muchas embarcaciones han te-
nido que retirarse por importantes daños como le pasó
al Súper Maxi “Skandia”, que perdió su quilla.
El evento se celebra desde 1945, y en el pasado
mes de diciembre cumplió su edición número 64,
evento en donde participaron embarcaciones de paí-
ses como Australia, Holanda y Nueva Zelanda. La tan

This 628mile long test is one of the sport’smost
important icons in Australia during the summer,
reaching a crowd that can be compared to the “Aus-
tralian Open” since no other nautical challenge
reaches the coverage points like every 26th of De-
cember on the “Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race”.
This competition is considered in the sport of
sailing as an extreme test of navigation, since the
weather conditions this race assembles are very
complicated to the south on the Tasmanian Sea and
through the Bass Narrows.
The importance of this test is noticing the
weather’s ability of suddenly changing into the
worst and harshest conditions, without any notice.
There are many cases in this regatta where some
of the boats have to withdraw from the race due to
substantial damage, like the Super Maxi “Skandia”
when loosing its keel.
This event has been celebrated since 1945, and
on this past December they had their 64th celebra-
tion, an event with the participation of boats from
countries like Australia, Holland and New Zealand.
