AN UNFORGETTABLE ENCOUNTER PART II
I
n the previous issue of AMURA 94, we enjoyed the
story told by professional diver Alberto Friscione
and his experience among sharks. Here, he tells
us another unforgettable encounter, this time with
Atlantic spotted dolphins.
The ship’s captain told us of a place, not far from
where we were (Freeport, in the Bahamas), which is
the ideal spot for interacting with Atlantic spotted
dolphins. The suggestion was so attractive and sea
conditions so good, that we decided to leave imme-
diately to try our luck. We raised anchors.
After several hours of sailing, we arrived late
at night, to a point in the ocean set amid the blue
ocean ... or in the middle of oceanic nowhere, if pre-
ferred. The Captain, calm as the seaman who he is,
got out from the storage of the ship some powerful
submarine spotlights and hung them on the side of
the boat. As they were lit, fish and squid came after
the larvae attracted by the lights, which gathered by
the thousands.

n el número anterior, AMURA 94, disfrutamos
del relato que hiciera el buzo profesional Alberto
Friscione sobre su experiencia entre y ante tibu-
rones; aquí nos narra otro encuentro inolvidable, esta
vez con delfines moteados del Atlántico.
El capitán del barco nos comentó de un lugar, no
muy lejos de donde estábamos (isla Freeport, Baha-
mas), que era ideal para interactuar con delfines mo-
teados del Atlántico. La sugerencia era tan atractiva y
las condiciones del mar tan buenas, que decidimos sa-
lir de inmediato a probar suerte. Levantamos anclas.
Después de varias horas de navegar, ya entrada
la noche, arribamos a un punto del océano situado
en medio de la nada oceánica... o del “todo” oceáni-
co, si se prefiere. El capitán, tranquilo como el hom-
bre de mar que es, sacó de la bodega del barco unos
potentes reflectores submarinos y los colgó en un
costado del barco. En cuanto los prendió llegaron
peces y calamares en pos de las larvas que, atraídas
por las luces, se juntaban por millares.

of the Atlantic. They
can also be found in
Equatorial American
waters and in the
Canary Islands, off
the coast of Africa. It
is possibly the most
uncommon of all
varieties of dolphins.
Its average length is
about 2meters and
weighs around 100 kg
.
