Los delfines moteados del Atlántico son anima-
les gregarios. Me comentó el capitán que en mar
abierto se pueden contar hasta 50 animales juntos,
pero en este bajo de arena no más de 15 y casi siem-
pre los mismos. Van a ese lugar específico en busca
de su alimento predilecto: cefalópodos y peces de
algunas variedades.
Al acercarse a nosotros pudimos observarles
manchas en todo su cuerpo, más distinguibles en los
adultos, ya que en las crías son de color gris claro.
Sentía mucha curiosidad por saber más de esta es-
pecie, pero en ese momento lo único que me intere-
só fue gozar de su simpatía y aceptar su invitación
a jugar con ellos; y sobre todo con uno de nuestros
guías, Travis, a quien ya conocen. Esperan con muy
buena disposición el momento en el que Travis haga
una serie de piruetas que luego imitan los delfines, o
jugar con un trapo que se pasan unos a otros mien-
tras emiten sonidos que me parecían de alegría.
Estaba tan feliz en el agua observando ese es-
pectáculo tan increíble, que por un momento pensé
que era irreal. Pero no, era verdadero.
Después de esta extraordinaria experiencia que
me regaló la mar, sólo puedo comentar que estoy
convencido de que llevo el rumbo correcto al tratar de
salvar a ésta y a otras especies por todos los medios
a mi alcance; que no sentí ni el mínimo temor al estar
nadando entre tantos delfines en su hábitat y en ple-
na noche; más bien como me sentí fue humilde ante
su gran belleza y su amable convivencia.
Atlantic spotted dolphins are gorgeous animals.
Our captain said one can count up to 50 dolphins
together in open sea, but in these shallow banks,
you will find no more than 15 and most of the time
they are the same. They come to this specific spot in
search of their favorite food, some varieties of fish
and cephalopods.
As they approached we could see their spots all
over their body. They are more distinguishable in
adults; the young ones are light gray in color. I was
very curious to learn more about these species, but
now the only thing that I could think of, was the en-
joyment of their friendship and had to accept their
invitation to play. They played especially with one of
our guides, Travis, whom they know well. They wait,
with great disposition for Travis who makes a series
of pirouettes, then the dolphinsmimic him, and they
play with a rag passing it to each other whilemaking
some sounds which seemed tome sounds of joy.
I was so happy in the water watching this amaz-
ing show, that for a moment I thought it was unreal.
But, Oh my God! It was true!.
After this extraordinary experience, a true gift
from the sea, I can only say that, I am convinced
that I am on the right track by trying to save this
and other species with every means in my power.
I did not feel the least fear by swimming at night
among these many dolphins in their wild habi-
tat, but rather, I felt humbled by their beauty and
friendly coexistence.
