Nosotros desde cubierta veíamos como se llenaba
de vida el mar. De pronto hicieron su aparición un pez
vela y un bello delfín moteado. Varios de mis compa-
ñeros ya estaban preparados con visor y cámara en
mano, el resto tardamos un poco más en ponernos
nuestros trajes de neopreno. Brincamos al agua y al
instante nos vimos ante uno de los espectáculos ma-
rinos más increíbles que he podido observar en mi
vida: delfines moteados del Atlántico a la caza de pe-
ces voladores. Su veloz habilidad era tal que, cuando
un pequeño pez se elevaba fuera del agua, un magni-
fico delfín calculaba con exacta precisión su punto de
reingreso y lo atrapaba casi antes de caer.
Entre lo que más me maravilló incluyo haber
visto a una madre delfín enseñándole a su peque-
ño, con gran paciencia, la difícil tarea de procurarse
el alimento. Fue una gran suerte poder presenciar
esta lección, un momento mágico. Regresamos
a bordo pasada la media noche, muertos de frío y
cansados, pero con el espíritu muy alegre.
El amanecer nos encontró en otras aguas, nave-
gando un mar muy claro y de poca profundidad. La
dorada luz del sol se filtraba por el espejo del azul
del mar, dándonos unas imágenes claras y bellas de
esos delfines moteados del Atlántico que habíamos
venido a buscar. En este punto quiero comentar que
los encuentros con delfines en su medio natural son
cada día más esporádicos, y cuando de casualidad los
encuentras, rara vez interactúan con humanos. Pero
ese no fue el caso que aquí relato, pues llegaron para
jugar con nosotros entre 12 y 15 delfines en grupo.
We watched from the deck, and were amazed
of how the sea became alive. Suddenly, a sailfish
and a beautiful spotted dolphin appeared. Several
of my colleagues were ready with visor and camera
in hand, as for the rest; it took us a little longer to
get in our wetsuits. We jumped into the water and
instantly we were facing one of the most incred-
ible marine shows I have seen in my life. Atlantic
spotted dolphins hunting flying fish. Its swift skill
was such that when a small fish rose out of the wa-
ter, a magnificent dolphin calculated with exact
precision the point of reentry and almost caught
it before it fell.
Among everything we saw, what marveled me
the most was a mother dolphin teaching her little
one, with great patience, the difficult task of procur-
ing food. It was a wonderful, lucky opportunity to
witness this lesson, amagical moment. We returned
on board after midnight, cold and tired but with a
cheerful spirit.
At dawn we were in different waters. We were
navigating in a clear and shallow sea. The golden
sunlight was filtering through the mirror of the
blue sea, giving us clear images of those beautiful
Atlantic spotted dolphins we were looking for. At
this point I want to say that encounters with dol-
phins in their natural environment are becoming
more sporadic, and if by any chance you find them,
they rarely interact with humans. But that was not
the case in this story, about 12 to 15 dolphins in a
group, came and played with us.
