Desde tiempos inmemoriales este elemento de
la naturaleza ha tenido una personalidad propia, tal
como lo hace constar su nombre cuya etimología
griega, adámas (
αδάμας
), que significa invencible o
inalterable, le da ese carácter único.
El diamante es una piedra preciosa con carac-
terísticas físicas superlativas, debido al fuerte
enlace entre sus átomos, lo cual le brinda la más
alta dureza y conductividad térmica; mientras
que su alta dispersión refractiva, es decir esa pro-
piedad de irradiar la luz en diferentes tonalida-
des, le confiere su inconfundible brillo.
La escasez, belleza y gran dureza del diamante
le han dado un misterio y valor especiales. Mu-
chas culturas le han otorgado propiedades má-
gicas, al punto de no usarlo de forma decorativa,
sino como un elemento de poder. A finales de la
Edad Media, los diamantes comenzaron a consi-
derarse como joyas, sin perder nunca su simbo-
logía como talismán, pero adquiriendo nuevos
significados y valor.

Its scarcity, gorgeousness and great hard-
ness has invested the diamond with special
mystery and value. Many a culture has granted
it magic properties, to the point of not using
it in a decorative way but as power element. At
the end of the Middle Ages, diamonds started to
be regarded as gemstones, without ever losing
their symbology as talismans, but acquiring new
meanings and values.
