Los zafiros azules más codiciados son principal-
mente de Australia y Tailandia; las minas de Australia
han producido zafiros azules con la más alta calidad
comercial que cualquier otra fuente de la historia. Las
más antiguas minas de zafiro son las de Sri Lanka, una
isla cuyo patrimonio en el ámbitominero se remonta a
más de 2,000 años y donde algunos de los más impre-
sionantes anillos de compromiso de zafiro tienen sus
orígenes. La isla es conocida como Gem Island debido
a la variedad de joyas que se encuentran ahí, como los
granates, topacios y piedras lunares, pero Sri Lanka es
el más reconocido por sus zafiros, el azul de Ceilán y el

Tras el anuncio del compromiso del príncipe Gui-
