One of the most outstanding aspects of this small
island, discovered by Christopher Columbus, is that
it covers a mere 88 km
2
. It is shared by two cultures:
the French in the southern part and the Dutch to the
north, and depending on the area you are in, this ter-
ritory is referred to as Saint Martin or Sint Maarten,
respectively.

The limits of the island were formed in a very strange
way when two sailors, one French and the other Dutch
found each other in the Baie Longue and they circum-
navigated the islandone each side and found eachother
again. Now the border is marked only by a sign and can
be crossedwith no problemat all.

Saint Martin possesses an extraordinary wealth of
stunning landscapes such as the Colombier Valley
and Paradise Peak with its tropical jungle. It offers
places such as Oyster Pond, Anse Marcel and Terres
Basses, which offer a unique panorama, as well as
numerous paradisiacal beaches.

The quiet little fishing village of Orleans, also called
the French Quarter, is located on the eastern side of
the island just north of the border with St. Maarten.
It was the original settlement of the French in St.
Martin and some of the original seventeenth-centu-
ry structures are still preserved here. This part of the
island has not been developed extensively; so much
of the old atmosphere has remained unspoiled.

sa (en la parte sur) y la holandesa (en el sector
norte), y según la zona en que se esté hay que refe-
rirse a este territorio como Saint Martin o Sint
Maarten, respectivamente.
• Los límites de la isla fueron definidos de una forma
muy peculiar, cuando dos marineros, uno francés y
otro holandés, se encontraron en la Baie Longue die-
ron la vuelta a la isla, cada uno por su lado, hasta
encontrarse de nuevo. Ahora la frontera existe sólo
por su letrero, y se pasa de un lado al otro sin proble-
ma alguno.
• Saint Martin posee una riqueza extraordinaria de
paisajes preciosos como el Valle de Colombier y el
Pico Paraíso de selva tropical. Ofrece sitios como
Oyster Pond, Anse Marcel, y Basses Terres, que brin-
dan un panorama único, y sus playas pariadisacas
son numerosas.
• Orleans es una pequeña villa de pescadores ubicada
en la parte este de la isla, al norte de la frontera con
Sint Maarten. Allí se encontraba la colonia original de
la isla francesa y muchas de las estructuras del siglo
XVII son preservadas. Esa parte de la isla no sufrió
gran desarrollo, por eso la atmósfera de aquellos
tiempos aún es perceptible.
