Investigador submarino, camarógrafo procurado
por quien buscara al mejor bajo el agua, además fue un
guía profundamente conocedor. Su programa televisivo
Mundo Marino estaba dedicado a mostrar las maravillas
de los mares mexicanos: las cascadas de arena en Baja
California Sur, las cristalinas aguas de nuestro caribe
mexicano, los lobos marinos del mar de Cortez, atrave-
sando todo el golfo en lanchas de goma.
Ramón Bravo tuvo el toque mágico para contagiar
su amor y el respeto por la naturaleza, en especial por
su mundo submarino. Eso inspiró a muchos a abrazar
la carrera de biología marina, oceanografía, buceo o la
fotografía submarina como profesión, y a muchos más
que se dedicaron a la conservación de nuestro medio
ambiente desde otras miras.
El mayor mérito de Ramón Bravo fue su an-
ticipación a lo que hoy ya tiene una importan-
cia reconocida. A través del atractivo del mundo
subacuático fue descubriendo –y comunicando- la
importancia de cuidar los ecosistemas que han
tardado millones de años en formarse, y pueden
perderse en un descuido.
Comenzó presentando a la mirada pública las or-
cas de San Benito B.C., pues fue el primer fotógrafo
en captarlas en su ambiente; derribó así un mito mi-
lenario: las orcas cazan para su propia sobrevivencia
y no son asesinas, como la tradición decía. Cuando le
pregunté a Ramón qué había sentido al estar allá aba-
jo, solo, con varios de los animales que tienen fama
de asesinos, me contestó como casualmente; “Estos

Ramon Bravo had the magic touch to spread his
love and respect for nature, especially his submarine
world. It was that magic which inspired many to em-
brace the career ofmarinebiology, oceanography, div-
ing and underwater photography as a profession, and
manymorewhowerededicated to the conservationof
our environment fromother points of views.
Ramon Bravo’s greatest accomplishment was
his anticipation of what is now recognized of signif-
icance. Through his efforts, he exposed the attrac-
tive underwater world he was discovering, and com-
municated the importance of caring for ecosystems
that has takenmillions of years to form, and may be
lost if not cared for.
He began introducing to the public a view of the
orcas at San Benito, BC. He was the first photogra-
pher to capture these animals in their environment,
and dismissed an ancient myth that orcas hunt for
their own survival and are not killers. When I asked
Ramon what he felt when he was down there, alone,
with those animals that are reputed murderers; he
responded casually, “These animals have suchbeauti-
