abandona a la hembra. El periodo de gestación dura
alrededor de 100 días y normalmente nacen en ca-
madas de dos a cuatro cachorros. Pueden criar en
cualquier época del año.
Come piezas mayores como venado, jabalí, tapir
y carpincho, el mayor roedor del mundo. El jaguar
es un depredador que suele subir a los árboles para
acechar a sus presas, caer sobre ellas y darles muer-
te con una sola y potente mordida. A diferencia de
otros felinos, el jaguar no evita el agua; de hecho, es
muy buen nadador. En los ríos caza peces, tortugas
y lagartos pequeños. Generalmente evita el contac-
to con los humanos.
Todo lo anterior hace que la selva del Amazonas
le resulte ideal, por lo que es en ese extenso medio
donde se le encuentra con mayor densidad. Otras zo-
nas que ha hecho suyas son casi todo tipo de bosques,
zonas ribereñas, llanuras herbáceas, matorrales secos
y espinosos, desiertos y sabanas. El único lugar que
no ha podido conquistar son las elevadas montañas,
donde impera el puma por estar mejor adaptado.
El jaguar se encuentra entre las especies amena-
zadas. Su principal depredador es el hombre, pues lo
caza para obtener su piel o para evitar que cause es-
tragos en el ganado cuando sale de las selvas en bus-

The jaguar is a solitary and territorial animal that
lives in pairs only during the mating season, which
lasts four to five weeks. Before birth, the male leaves
the female; they have the capacity to breed in any
season, the gestation period lasts about 100 days
and cubs are usually born in litters of two to four.
It eats larger animals such as tapirs, capybaras,
deer and peccaries –the largest rodent in the world.
The Jaguar is a predator that climbs trees to ambush
its preys and kills them with an accurate bite in the
throat. Unlike other cats they don’t fear water. In
fact they are very good swimmers and get fish and
turtles in the rivers. The one contact Jaguars usually
avoid is with humans.
