Living among these corals are sea sponges,
both hard and soft, healthy marine animals that
filter the water to feed, as well as giving the sea
exciting colors and whimsical shapes. The coral,
the same as the sponges, provide shelter and a
home to a multiplicity of fish and different marine
organisms, among which I can mention small
shell-less snails, called “nudibranquios” (sea
slugs), a word that means “naked slugs”.
In the holes or caves, we find the sumptuous
butterfly fish that distracts its predators with a
stripe around its eyes with a spot behind. The sin-
gular and rare hamlet fish looks like it has been
taken out of a painting because of its striking and
contrasting colors.
Comber fish are voracious, andwith their classic
pointed body, observe suspiciously. The barracuda,
a natural predator, the same as the brown ones and
the green ones, wait patiently for their prey, observ-
ing us with the least fear. Silver and imposing tar-
pons, which travel in large shoals, found in this
small cove a good spot to spend the summer season.
Using the power of mimicry, the powerful stonefish
passes unseen. On a brain coral, static, we found
stylized lizard fish, giving us the feeling of being
the master of its domain. The surgeon fish gets it
name from the sharp spine along its body, which
can cut like a surgeon’s scalpel. The damselfish are
very bad tempered and defend their domains with
great ferocity, even against larger fish.
Among all the species mentioned live the black,
white and red sea urchins with their sharp spines
to discourage other species from capturing them.
On the sandy bottoms, we can observed the “sea
marinos que filtran el agua para obtener su alimento,
además de dotar al mar de colores excitantes y formas
caprichosas. Los corales, al igual que las esponjas, dan
cabida y hogar a una multiplicidad de peces y diferen-
tes organismos marinos, entre los que destacan los
pequeños caracoles sin concha, llamados nudibran-
quios, palabra que significa “branquias al desnudo”.
En las oquedades o cuevas encontramos al sun-
tuoso pezmariposa, el cual distrae a sus depredadores
con una banda alrededor de sus ojos o con un lunar en
la parte posterior. El singular y raro pez hamblet pare-
ce extraído de un cuadro de pintor, ya que los colores
en su rostro son atrevidos y contrastantes.
Las cabrillas son peces voraces, que con su clásico
cuerpo punteado observan con recelo. La barracuda,
depredadora por naturaleza, al igual que las morenas,
tanto verdes como pintas, esperan pacientemente a su
presa, observándonos sin el menor temor. Los platea-
dos e imponentes sábalos, que viajan en grandes car-
dúmenes, encontraron en esta pequeña ensenada un
buen sitio para pasar la estación veraniega. Usando el
poder de mimetización, el poderoso pez piedra acecha
mientras pasa desapercibido. Encima de un coral cere-
bro, y estático, encontramos al estilizado pez lagarto,
dándonos la sensación de ser el amo y señor de sus
dominios. El pez cirujano recibe este nombre por una
afilada espina que presenta en su cuerpo, la cual puede
producir cortes semejantes al bisturí de un cirujano. Las
damiselas o señoritas tienen muy mal carácter y
defienden sus dominios con gran fiereza, incluso frente
a peces de mayor tamaño.
En torno a todos los ejemplares mencionados
conviven los erizos (negros, blancos o rojos), todos
