T
he pelicans are easily recognizable due to their par-
ticular beak. It counts with a bag in the inferior
maxillarywhich gives themthe sloppy and clumsy
appearance, even though it’s truly one of the birds that
better fly. And not only that, they also swim and dive.
It is one of the biggest sea birds, they can measure
more than three meters. But they are not just one
species, since this family counts with eightmembers, all
of them with the characteristic bag, which it is really
used as a net to catch the fish fromwhich they feed on.
Not all of them use it in the same way. For example
the brown pelican (
Pelecanus occidentalis
) dives in from
heights up to 20 meters flinging their wings backwards,
in their back, to prevent themfor breakingwhen theyhit
the water. When it is under water it extends this bag and
catches the fish it saw from the air.
Others like theWhiteAmericanpelican (
Pelecanus ery-
throrhynchos
) only submerges the head while it swims in
not toodeepwaters, giving the appearanceof rowingwith
the head, but in fact under the water it extends the bag of
its beak and that is how it catches the fish. Most of the
time they do it in groups, they encase the fish between
several birds and that’s how they feed.
The White American pelican is capable to hold 11
liters of water in its bag, which gives us an idea of its
huge capacity. The younger pelicans are fed by grab-

su particular pico. Cuenta con una bolsa en el
maxilar inferior que le da su apariencia torpe y
lenta, aunque en realidad se trata de una de las aves que
mejor vuelan. Y no sólo eso, también nadan y bucean.
Es una de las aves marinas más grandes, llega a
medir más de tres metros. Pero no son sólo una especie,
ya que esta familia cuenta con ocho miembros, todos
con la característica bolsa, que en realidad es utilizada
como una red para atrapar a los peces de los cuales se
alimentan.
No la usan todos de la misma forma. Por ejemplo el
pelícano café (
Pelecanus occidentalis
) se zambulle desde
alturas de hasta de 20 metros echando sus alas para
atrás, en su espalda, para evitar que se rompan al golpe-
ar el agua. Al estar bajo el agua extiende esta bolsa y
atrapa a los peces que antes divisó desde el aire.
Otros, como el pelícano blanco americano (
Pelecanus
erythrorhynchos
) sólo sumerge la cabeza mientras nada en
aguas poco profundas, dando la apariencia de remar con la
cabeza, pero en realidad bajo el agua extiende la bolsa de su
pico y así atrapa a los peces. La mayor parte del tiempo lo
haceengrupos, encajonana los peces entrevarias aves yasí
se alimentan.
El pelícano blanco americano es capaz de sostener
11 litros de agua en su bolsa, lo que nos da idea de su
