found a path through the reef. It is a famous dive spot
but we could not reach it because of the strong current
and side wind. We continued south with a sky that was
filling with black clouds. Using the engine, we entered
the lagoon through the Trou D’Eau Douce pass and an-
choredon thewest coast of the Islandof Deer, whichpro-
tectedus fromthewind. It started to rain, the sea turned
grayandthewaterbecamefurious.Thestormlastedmo-
re than two hours but the sun set amidst bright colors.
Taking advantage of the morning’s clear sky, high
tide and calm breeze, we sailed passed the coral ba-
rrier opposite Bambous Mountain, which rises 626 m
(2,054 ft) near the beach, backed by a mountain chain
where youwill find Blanche, 523m (1,716 ft) high, and
Maurice, 316 m (1,037 ft) high. The view, with the tur-
quoise sea in the foreground, is delightful.
The barrier forced us to sail farther from land be-
cause, in this area, it is separated from the coast for
about 4 km (2.5 m). Lion Peak, 450 m (1,476 ft) high,
dominates the beautiful bay where Mahébourg and
its beautiful Notre Dame Des Anges church are loca-
ted. It is a peaceful city which we toured whenwe arri-
ved, because it is near the airport.

French fort and Aux Fouquets island, a lighthouse.
These two islands protect the pass to Port Mahébourg.
The views are stunning, thanks to the extraordinary
contrast of the turquoise lagoon, the white sand bea-
ches, the green foliage and Aux Aigrettes island,
which is a natural reserve.

buceo y donde no pudimos llegar por la fuerte corriente
y viento de lado. Seguimos hacia el sur con un cielo ca-
da vez más cargado de nubes negras. Entramos con
motor en la laguna por el paso de Trou D’Eau Douce y
anclamos en la costa oeste de la Isla de los Ciervos,
que nos protegía del viento. La lluvia se soltó, el mar
se volvió gris, y el cielo y el agua se unieron en furia.
La tormenta duró más de dos horas y al atardecer, el
sol se acostó entre colores brillantes.
Aprovechando el cielo despejado de lamañana, lama-
rea alta y la tranquila brisa, zarpamos para pasar la barre-
ra de coral frente al Monte Bambú, que alza sus 626 m
junto a la playa, respaldado por la cadena montañosa
donde están Blanche, de 532 m, y Maurice 316 m, lo
que ofrece un suntuoso paisaje con el mar turquesa en
primer plano.
La barrera nos obligó a navegar más lejos de la tierra
porque esa región se separa de la costa en unos 4 km. El
Pico del León domina con sus 450 m la hermosa bahía en
el fondo de la cual se alojaMahébourg y su iglesia Notre Da-
me Des Anges. Una tranquila ciudad que habíamos visitado
a nuestra llegada, junto al aeropuerto.
La Isla de la Passe alberga los vestigios de un gran
fuerte francés y la isla Aux Fouquets un faro. Esas dos is-
las protegen el paso hacia el Puerto de Mahébourg. Las
vistas son impactantes por su belleza, con ese extraordi-
nario contraste de la laguna de color turquesa, las playas
de arena blanca, la tierra verde brillante y la isla Aux
Aigrettes (reserva natural).
