egún la leyenda, Shiva y su esposa Parvati daban
la vuelta a la Tierra montados sobre un carro cu-
bierto de flores cuando descubrieron una bella is-
la rodeada por un mar color esmeralda y turquesa. Shiva,
que llevaba sobre su cabeza el Ganges para proteger a la
Tierra de inundaciones, decidió aterrizar en la isla, pero
con los movimientos de la maniobra algunas gotas se
cayeron en un cráter y formaron un lago natural, el
Grand Bassin o Ganga Talao. Al Ganges no le gustó la
idea de dejar un poco de su agua en una isla desierta,
pero Shiva le contestó que pronto los hombres nacidos
en sus riberas llegarían a la isla y cada año realizarían
una peregrinación en ese lago.
Por ello, cada año, febrero o marzo, los peregrinos
hindúes de la isla se visten de blanco, llegan con un
kanvar (templo de madera, en miniatura) y efectúan el
ritual del Puja: queman incienso, realizan ofrendas de
flores o comida que flotan sobre el lago y rezan. Esa
fiesta del Maha Shivaratree es en honor a Shiva y al
Ganges, en la que cubren al lago de ofrendas al final de
los tres días. Es un lugar excepcional, en el que se sien-
te la magia de los dioses y donde una enigmática onda
flota en el aire. El misticismo envuelve a los templos y
al bosque que lo rodea.

beautiful island surrounded by an emerald- and
turquoise-colored sea. Shiva, who carried the Ganges
on his head to protect the earth from floods, decided to
set down on the island but, during the landing, some
drops fell into a crater, forming a natural lake, the
Grand Bassin or Ganga Talao. The Ganges did not like
the idea of leaving some of its water on the deserted
island but Shiva answered that soon the men born on
its shores would reach the island and would make a
yearly pilgrimage to the lake.
This is why every year, in February or March, the
island’s Hindu pilgrims dress in white, take a kanvar
(a miniature wood temple) and perform the Puja ritu-
al: they burn incense, float offerings of flowers and
food on the lake and pray. The Maja Shivaratree is car-
ried out in honor of Shiva and the Ganges and the lake
is covered in offerings for three days. It is an excep-
tional place in which the magic of the gods is palpa-
ble, where a mysterious ambiance fills the air and
mysticism envelops the temples and the forests that
surround them.
