Zihuatanejo también es referirse a cálidas
y cristalinas aguas que invitan a los más
aventureros a fascinarse con el mundo marino, ya
que es el área coralina con mayor biodiversidad del
Pacífico americano.
En el área Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo y Morros de Po-
tosí se localizan 12 arrecifes que por su forma co-
rresponden al tipo de arrecifes bordeantes, y por
su tamaño pueden ser considerados los más gran-
des de la costa del Pacífico mexicano.
Debido a la cantidad de especies de corales, pe-
ces y equinodermos las comunidades más impor-
tantes se encuentran en playas de Manzanillo,
Zacatoso, Caleta de Chon e Isla Ixtapa (Playa Coral,
Punta de Cerro Colorado, Playa Carey) y Morros de
Potosí.
Pero además, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo tiene la gran
fortuna de ser uno de los principales y preferidos
lugares para que la tortuga de mar salga a sus pla-
yas a desovar, especialmente la del tipo Golfina, y
en menor escala las de los tipos Laúd y Carey (esto
tiene lugar durante la temporada de lluvias).
Los gobiernos, los particulares, varias compa-
ñías, escuelas de buceo y muchos hoteles ayudan
en esta importante tarea, recolectando los huevos
que se depositan en las diferentes playas y reubi-
cándolos en corrales protegidos hasta su eclosión.
Por ejemplo, en 1997, primer año de esfuerzo
común entre las autoridades y la iniciativa priva-
da del destino, más de 5,000 saludables tortugui-
tas fueron liberadas al mar gracias a este
programa. Luego, en 1998, más de 7,000, en 1999
más de 25,000 y en el año 2000 se logró liberar
más de 93,000. Desde entonces, año con año se ha
continuado con esta labor.

o speak of the binomial Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo beach
means talking about the warmth and clarity of the
waters that invite adventurous travelers to be awed
by the world beneath the sea, which contains themost bio-
logically diverse corral reef on the Pacific Coast of the
Americas.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and Morros de Potosí were part of a
research project on Guerrero’s corals and 12 corral reefs
were located. They are categorized as border reefs because
of their shape and are ranked as the largest on the Mexican
Pacific coast.
Because of the importance that these privileged natu-
ral settings have for tourism, caring for and respecting
the conservation of the region has become a priority. The
communities that have the greatest variety of corals, fish
and sea urchins are found in the waters off the beaches of
Manzanillo, Zacatoso, Caleta de Chon and Isla Ixtapa
(Playa Coral, Punta de Cerro Colorado, Playa Carey) and
Morros de Potosí.
What is more, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is fortunate enough
to be one of the most important places that sea turtles,
especially the species known as Golfina, as well as the
Laud and Carey, have chosen to come onto the beaches to
lay their eggs (this occurs during the rainy season).
Government organizations, individuals, a number of
companies, scuba diving schools and many hotels help in
this important task, collecting the eggs that are deposited
on the various beaches and relocating them in corrals
where they are protected until they hatch.
In 1997, the first year of this combined effort between
the public and private sectors, more than 5,000 healthy
baby turtles were freed into the sea thanks to this pro-
gram. Later, in 1998, there were more than 7,000, in 1999
more than 25,000 and in 2000 over 93,000 hatchlings were
liberated. Since then, this labor of love has continued year
after year.
