La primera flota
Aristóteles adquirió su primera flota en una subasta de
remate de la Canadian Pacific Railway, se trataba de seis
barcos antiguos por los cuales negoció hasta obtener
“un precio justo”: 20,000 dólares cada uno; esa flota de
buques de vapor fue el inicio de un emporio naviero que
llegó a incluir barcos cargueros, petroleros, balleneros
y cruceros.
Posteriormente, obtuvo de la Metropolitan Life In-
surance Company un préstamo por 40 millones de dó-
lares para la construcción de barcos nuevos, dejando en
garantía el contrato de flete que tenía con una empresa
petrolera y para 1939 ya poseía una importante flota
de petroleros. En 1957, fundó la Olympic Airways (hoy
Olympic Air), la primera línea aérea de bandera griega.

Adams, su biógrafo oficial, cuentan que Ari podía oler
el dinero y las oportunidades de ganarlo. Con tesón,
pero con una mayor dosis de ambición, Aristóteles
Onassis cimentó un imperio de inmuebles, salas de
espectáculos, hoteles, una aerolínea y casinos, entre
ellos el de Montecarlo, asociado con diversos empre-
sarios y reconocidas personalidades como su amigo el
Príncipe Rainiero.
The first fleet
Aristotle acquired his first fleet at a Canadian Pa-
cific Railway auction. Six old ships for which he
kept bargaining until he got a “fair price”, $20,000
dollars each; this steam boat fleet was the begin-
ning of a vessel operating emporium that man-
aged to include cargo ships, tankers, whaling ships
and cruises.
Later on, he got a 40 million dollar loan from the
Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for building
new ships, leaving as collateral a freight contract he
had with an oil company; by 1939 he already pos-
sessed a considerable fleet of tankers. In 1957, he
founded Olympic Airways (today, Olympic Air), the
first airline to display the Greek flag.
Peter Evans, inthebook “Ari” andTerryChristen in
“The True Story of Onassis” the same as Peter Adams,
his official biographer, recount that Ari could smell
money and the opportunities to earn it. With tenac-
ity, but even a higher dosage of ambition, Aristotle
Onassis founded an empire of real estate properties,
auditoriums, hotels, an airline and casinos–among
them the Montecarlo—in partnership with several
businessmen and renowned personalities, such his
friend Prince Rainiero.
