La reina de los mares

De nacionalidad canadiense, Christina vio la luz en 1943

y fue la preferida de las embarcaciones de Ari Onassis.

Originalmente ensamblada como fragata clase

river

para la Real Armada Canadiense, llevó el nombre de

Stormont; participó en la Segunda Guerra Mundial es-

coltando convoyes marítimos.

Ari adquirió la embarcación en una subasta en

1954, por 34,000 dólares, dándole el nombre de la hija

que tuvo con su primera esposa Athina “Tina” Livanos,

hija del magnate de barcos griego Stavros Livanos. Sin

embargo, no llegó a ser conocida como la reina de los

mares, sino hasta que convirtió al navío en el yate más

lujoso del momento y con una inversión de 4 millones

de dólares en su remodelación, lo transformó en una

lujosa residencia flotante.

Sus 99 metros de eslora, 18 suites dobles y tabu-

retes forrados con piel de pene de ballena, fueron ti-

tulares de la mayoría de los medios de comunicación

buena parte de la segunda mitad del siglo XX; pero su

fama como emblema de poderío y lujo se la dieron los

personajesmás famosos y poderosos de las décadas de

1950, 1960 y 1970 que solían dejarse ver sobre la popa

The Queen of the Seas

Of Canadian nationality, Christina was launched

in 1943 and was Ari Onassis’s favorite boat. Origi-

nally built as a River-class frigate for the Canadian

Royal Navy, the original name of the vessel was

“Stormont;” and she participated in the Second

World War by escorting maritime convoys.

In 1954, Ari acquired her in an auction for

$34,000 dollars, christening her with the name

of the daughter he had had with his first wife,

Athina “Tina” Livianos, who was Stavros Livanos’

daughter. Nevertheless, she was not recognized

as the Queen of the Seas until he transformed her

into the most luxurious yacht of the time. With 40

million dollars invested in renovating her, he con-

verted her into a posh floating residence.

Her 99 meters length, her 18 double suites and

her stools upholstered with whale skin, were head-

lines in most of the media in the second half of the

XX century. The most famous and powerful per-

sonalities of the decades of 1950, 1960 and 1970

frequently allowed to be seen on the bow deck of

this vessel. Figures of politics such as Winston

Churchill and John F. Kennedy, who spent several

days in the Mediterranean Sea; movie and show

business stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Bur-

ton, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra and, of course,

Maria Callas, the soprano –the eternal love of the

sea magnate–; the same as Jacqueline Lee “Jackie”

(Bouvier) Kennedy Onassis, were regulars.
