are an introduction to the sea and are very popular
with residents, who appreciate their beauty.
Therewasnot a cloud in theblue skyon thepleasant
day that we sailed to Punta del Este. There was a slight
wind against us, which forced us to change direction.
The coast flaunted its goldensandbeaches, adornedby a
green ribbon of vegetation and several towns and sum-
mer homes. The river tasted,more andmore, like the sea.
Piriápolis is an exquisite port lying at the foot of
the San Antoniomountains. Forgotten during the win-
ter, it comes alive with the arrival of summer, when
people flock to the beaches. It is dominated by the
beautiful, rococo Hotel Argentino, a witness to its past.
Piriápolis is an excellent place to stop and enjoy
one of its famous seafood parrilladas in the La
Langosta (The Lobster) restaurant.
Punta del Este
In the afternoon we sailed with the same breeze on the
beautiful bay between Punta Negra and Punta Ballena.
It displays its stunning residences and the extravagant
home-town of Carlos Pérez Vilaró. Finally, raising its
towers on the horizon, appeared Punta del Este, at the
end of a long beach framed by dunes and pine trees.
Passing Gorriti Island with its outstanding beach-
es, transparent waters and the ruins of the Santa Ana
fortress (18th century), we entered the port’s marina,
which is protected from the Atlantic by a point on
which a blue lighthouse stands. Punta del Este is alive
in the warm summer, its restaurants are places where

Piriápolis es un exquisito puerto al pie del cerro
San Antonio, olvidado en el invierno, renaciente con la
llegada del verano y de la gente que viene a gozar de
sus playas, dominado por la belleza del Hotel Argenti-
no, rococó, testigo del pasado. Piriápolis es una exce-
lente escala para comer la famosa parrillada de
mariscos del restaurante La Langosta.
Punta del Este
La navegación de la tarde, con la misma brisa, nos permi-
tió recorrer la hermosa bahía entre Punta Negra y Punta
Ballena, donde se alojan bellas casas y la extravagante ca-
sa-pueblo de Carlos Páez Vilaró. Finalmente, alzando sus
torres en el horizonte, apareció Punta del Este al final de
una larga playa de dunas dominadas por pinares.
Pasando la isla Gorriti, que destaca por sus hermo-
sísimas playas de agua transparente y las ruinas de la
fortaleza de Santa Ana (siglo XVIII), entramos en la ma-
rina del puerto protegido del Atlántico por la punta que
domina el faro azul. Punta del Este es la vida del verano
caliente, sus restaurantes son los sitios a los que acu-
den los visitantes para comer y para ser vistos y ver
quiénes están.
Los restaurantes cambian de moda, las modas cam-
bian de lugar, las fiestas se organizan en las mansiones
