Un creador que cultivó todos los
géneros literarios y periodísticos
Cuentan que mientras leía un libro del poeta Baldomero Fernández
Moreno, descubrió su vocación literaria. En 1945 publicó su libro ini-
cial,
La víspera indeleble
; el éxito le llegó con su octava publicación,
Poemas de la oficina
, cuya primera edición se agotó en apenas 15
días. A lo largo de su existencia consumó una sólida obra que abarcó
la crítica literaria, la poesía, el ensayo, la narrativa o el drama, para
crear un legado que se cuenta en alrededor de 80 libros, que han sido
traducidos al menos a 30 idiomas.

Como dramaturgo sus creaciones más conocidas son:

. De acuerdo a los especialistas, toda esta
versatilidad se unifica en un inconfundible «estilo Benedetti». Él de-
cía en tono de broma al respecto: “Sólo me falta escribir una ópera”.
Recibió incontables reconocimientos, de los cuales destacan:
premio Reina Sofía de Poesía Iberoamericana; premio Internacio-
nal Menéndez Pelayo; premio Bartolomé Hidalgo por su trayectoria,
y premio Cristo Boptev de Bulgaria por sus ensayos y poemas. En
Bruselas, recibió el galardón Llama de Oro de Amnistía Internacional
por su novela Primavera con una esquina rota. Fue nombrado Doctor
Honoris Causa por la Universidad de la República y Ciudadano Ilustre
de la Ciudad de Montevideo. Su Biblioteca de Autor fue el primer es-
pacio dedicado a un escritor contemporáneo en La Biblioteca Virtual
Miguel de Cervantes, cuya Fundación lo distinguió póstumamente
como Patrono de Honor, por considerarlo como uno de los referentes
indiscutibles de la cultura contemporánea en el idioma español.
Escribió hasta el último aliento de su vida que ocurrió el 17 de
mayo de 2009, a la edad de 88 años, en su casa de Montevideo. En
su homenaje el gobierno uruguayo decretó duelo nacional y dispuso
que su velatorio se realizara con honores patrios en el Salón de los
Pasos Perdidos del Palacio Legislativo de Uruguay.

Some say that while he read a book by poet Baldomero Fernández
Moreno, he discovered his literary vocation. In 1945 he published
his first book,
Indelible Eve
, but he wasn’t truly successful until
his eight of publication,
Office Poems;
the first edition sold out in
only 15 days. Throughout his life, he established a solid career
that encompassed literary criticism, poetry, essay, narrative and
theater, and created a legacy that adds up to 80 books that have
been translated in at least 30 languages.
Among the most widely read titles are
Insomnia

Light-
sleeper, Memory and Hope, Inventory Two, Life That Parenthesis,
and
Quotidian
. His novels
The Truce,
and
Thanks for the Fire
have been
adapted to film. As a playwright, his most prominent works are:
The Report, Come and Go

Pedro and the Captain
. According to
specialists, all of this versatility is unified in an unmistakable
“Benedetti style”. “I only have to write an opera,” he used to joke.
He received countless awards, including the Reina Sofía Prize
for Ibero-American Poetry, the International prize Menéndez
Pelayo, the Bartolomé Hidalgo award to honor his career, and the
Christ Boptev award from Bulgaria for his essays and poems. In
Brussels, he received the Golden Flame Award from Amnesty Inter-
national for his novel Spring with a Broken Corner. He was named
Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of the Republic, and Illus-
trious Citizen of the City of Montevideo. His Author Library was
the first space dedicated to a contemporary writer in The Virtual
Library Miguel de Cervantes, and its Foundation appointed him as
Patron of Honor, considering him one of the indisputable refer-
ents of contemporary culture in the Spanish language.
He wrote until his last breath, which occurred on May 17, 2009
at the age of 88, at his home in Montevideo. In his honor, the Uru-
guayan government decreed national mourning and ordered that
his funeral was carried out with patriotic honors in the Hall of the
Lost Steps at the Legislative Palace of Uruguay.
