Declaración estética
En sus creaciones, Calatrava utiliza una mezcla de ace-
ro, cemento y madera, los cuales dota –como se ha
señalado– de movimiento, aportándole ciertos rasgos
de vida, esto se hace presente en el Milwaukee Art
Museum (MAM), uno de sus proyectos más conocidos;
visto desde diferentes ángulos, el edificio toma formas
distintas, desde un albatros alzando el vuelo, mien-
tras su cola hace la vez de puente que conecta con los
parques aledaños; hasta un gran barco con una vela
enorme –desde otra perspectiva–, que está por atracar
en el muelle del lago, al lado del cual se encuentra. Otros
ejemplos son el icónico edificio valenciano de la Ciudad
de las Artes y las Ciencias, esta singular edificación cuya
estructura representa el ojo de la sabiduría, que se abre
hacia el cielo, y el aeropuerto de Bilbao, en la municipali-
dad de Sondika, en el país vasco, conocido también como
La Paloma, por su forma de ave volando, y en cuyo inte-
rior las vigas de acero sirven para reforzar la estructura,
pero también imitan el esqueleto de la paloma (aunque
otros dicen que tiene figura de dragón).
Aesthetic Declaration
In his creations Calatrava uses a mix of Steel, ce-
ment and wood, to which he gives –as has been
noted- movement, adding certain life traits. This
becomes present in the Milwaukee Art Museum
(MAM), one of his best known projects; seen from
different angles, the building adopts different
forms, from an albatross raising in flight while its
tail serves as the bridge that joins the surround-
ing parks, to a large ship with a huge sail –from a
different perspective- that is about to dock in the
lake located on its side. Other examples are the
iconic Valencian building of the City of Arts and
Sciences, the singular structure of this building
represents the eye of wisdom that opens to the
sky, and the airport of Bilbao in the municipality
of Sondika, in the Basque country, known also as
The Dove, for it has the shape of a flying bird, and
in its interior, the Steel beams that reinforce the
structure also imitates the skeleton of the dove
(though others claim it has the shape of a dragon).
