Design
A la vez, mantiene características que muestran la
importancia de los edificios, pero, sobre todo, destaca
la función práctica que cumplen, así lo expresan el Cen-
tro Internacional de Ferias y Congresos, en Santa Cruz
de Tenerife, concebido como un recinto polivalente que
permite acoger los principales acontecimientos que tie-
nen lugar en la isla, así como el proyecto del Auditorio en
esta misma ciudad; edificaciones que lo definen como
uno de los arquitectos más atrevidos.
Los trazos en la arquitectura de Calatrava evocan el
movimiento, rasgo característico en él, pues además de
los edificios y los puentes, los objetos móviles figuran
entre sus creaciones más comunes; en este contexto,
en la Llotja de Sant Jordi de Alcoi, en la provincia de
Alicante, hay una parrilla triangular que se abre para
revelar una fuente en el centro, donde el agua fluye
cuando está abierta completamente. Otro ejemplo
de su evocación al movimiento se puede apreciar en
el pabellón SwissBau, con elementos móviles de hor-
migón, que producen una ondulación por medio de un
ingenioso mecanismo electromecánico.
At the same time, he maintains characteristics

as a versatile space that houses the main events that

The lines in Calatrava Architecture recall move-
ment, a characteristic trait of his, for besides the
buildings andbridges, themovingobjects are counted
amongst his most common creations; in this context,
in the Llotja of Sant Jordi of Alcoi, in the province of
Alicante, there is a triangular grill that opens to reveal
a fountain in its center, where the water falls when it
is fully opened. Another example of his recalling of
movement can be appreciated in the SwissBau pavil-
ion, with moving elements made of concrete, which
generate an undulation movement by means of an
ingenious electromechanicalmechanism.
