La experiencia de buceo en estas latitudes es
única, ya que la mayoría de los sistemas de arreci-
fes se mantienen intactos. Es de celebrar que tanto
autoridades como pobladores protegen las tierras
tribales y las aguas que mantienen en constante
observación, a fin de garantizar la supervivencia de
este tesoro biológico compuesto por al menos 398
especies de corales, 1,200 variedades de peces, y
cinco de tortugas.
A partir del año 2003, en esta zona se acentúo
el proyecto de conservación de arrecifes y de tibu-
rones, ya que estos últimos son una de las especies
más amenazadas del mundo, en gran parte por te-
mor y desconocimiento sobre su importancia para
mantener el equilibrio del ecosistema, y como pau-
tas para medir la salud de los mares. Los tiburones
mantienen vigorosa la población de las algas que
son imprescindibles para la existencia de los arre-
cifes de coral, sin los cuales, a su vez, estos colosos
de la naturaleza no sobrevivirían.
The experience of scuba diving in these lati-
tudes is unique, since most of the reef systems
remain intact. It is a reason to celebrate that au-
thorities as well as the population protect tribal
lands along with the waters that they monitor
constantly; the goal is to guarantee the survival
of this biological treasure composed by at least
398 coral species, 1,200 varieties of fish, and five
of turtles.
Since 2003, the project for conservation of
coral reefs and sharks was implemented in this
region because the latter are one of the most
endangered species in the world. This is largely
due to fear and unawareness of its significance
to keep the balance of the ecosystem, and as a
guideline to measure the oceans’ health. Sharks
keep the algae population thriving, which are
crucial for the existence of coral reefs. With-
out them, in turn, these nature giants would
not survive.
