ueen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland was
the fifth and last monarch of the Tudor Dy-
nasty. Shewas nicknamed “Gloriana” and “The
VirginQueen” because shenever contractedmarriage.
Despite themany adversities and schemes transcend-
ed in her time, she always emerged victorious thanks
toher strength, strongwill and intelligence. Underher
admirablemandate England reached the “goldenage”,
and Elizabeth I, historical immortality.
ElizabeththeFirst,wasborn inGreenwichonSeptem-
ber7,1533.ShewastheonlydaughterofHenrytheVIIIwith
hissecondwife,AnneBoleyn.Whenshewastwo,hermoth-
erwasaccusedofadulteryandsentencedtobebeheaded,in
accordance to theorder ofHenry, who in turndeclaredher
daughter a bastard and banished her from the court. Dur-
ing the years of exile, Elizabeth received a solid education,
whichhernaturalintelligencetookadvantageof.
When Elizabethwas about ten years old, Henry VIII
was convincedbyhissixthwifeCatherineParr, toautho-
rizethereturnofhisdaughterElizabeth.Thekingagreed
and,notonlythat,healsomadetheParliamentrecognize
thelegitimacyofElizabethandherolderstepsisterMary,
whowasCatholic.ElizabethwasveryclosetoEdward,the
heir to the crownandaLutheran likeher. At thedeathof
HenrytheVIII,PrinceEdwardwasbarelytenyearsold.He
ascended to the throne but, as expected, he did not take
the crown’s decisions but rather his guardian and favor-
ites.Beingofweakhealth,hediedin1553atage16.

lizabeth I Reina de Inglaterra e Irlanda fue la
quinta y última monarca de la Dinastía Tudor.
Le apodaban “Gloriana” y “La Reina Virgen”
porque nunca contrajo nupcias. Pese a las muchas
adversidades que sorteó siempre salió victoriosa y
trascendió los esquemas de su época gracias a su fir-
meza, voluntad férrea e inteligencia. Bajo su admira-
ble mandato Inglaterra alcanzó la “edad de oro”; ella,
la inmortalidad histórica.
Elizabeth (Isabel) Primera nació en Greenwich el 7
de septiembre de 1533. Fue la única hija de Enrique
VIII y su segunda esposa, Ana Bolena. Cuando tenía
dos años su madre fue acusada de adulterio y decapi-
tada, en acatamiento a la orden de Enrique, quien a la
vez declaró bastarda a su hija y la expulsó de la corte.
Durante los años de exilio recibió una sólida educación
que su inteligencia natural supo aprovechar.
Cuando Isabel tenía unos diez años de edad, Catali-
na Parr, sexta esposa de Enrique VIII, lo convenció de que
autorizara el regreso de su hija; el rey accedió y, más aún,
hizo reconocer ante el Parlamento la legitimidad de Isa-
bel y de su hermanastra mayor, María, que era católica.
Isabel estuvo muy unida a Eduardo, heredero a la corona
y luterano como ella. Al morir Enrique, el príncipe conta-
ba apenas condiez años. Subió al tronopero, como era de
esperarse, él no tomaba las decisiones de la corona sino
su tutor y sus favoritos. Débil de constitución, murió en
1553 cuando tenía 16 años.
