The route
WeflewfromQuito toBaltra. The capital of Ecuador,
Quito, is a colonial citywhich isworthspendingat least
a full day to enjoy its many churches, its historic cen-
ter and other attractions such as the Equator Middle of
theWorld.Both,upondepartureandarrivalourluggage
was inspected tocheck thatwedidnothave something
that couldaffect thehabitat of the archipelago.
Day 1
Once we past the inspection, we were greeted by
the person in charge of our boat and a bus took us
to the dock. Once there, with life jackets, we went
on a “panga” to the Evolution, a boat with wooden
floor and a classic touch in its line and decoration.
We would spend the next week on board in an atmo-
sphere of adventure and amazing discoveries.
After settling in and enjoying a very good meal,
the group split into two to make a panga ride and ob-
serve wildlife consisting mainly of blue-footed boo-
bies, sea lions and iguanas. This was to be only a taste,
because the next day, we would saw so many marine
iguanas at Punta Espinosa, and once in Fernandina
Island, we had to walk carefully to avoid stepping on
them. Among a rocky landscape, the grimcharacteris-
tics of the reptiles remitted us to prehistoric times, as
if time had stopped. The iguanas did not acknowledge
our curiosity or our presence. We saw many on the
ground and some in the sea. Back on board and as ev-
ery night before dinner, our enthusiastic guides gave
us a chat about what wewould see the next day.
El recorrido
Volamos de Quito a Baltra. La capital de Ecuador es
una ciudad colonial donde vale la pena quedarse al menos
un día completo para disfrutar de sus muchas Iglesias,
su centro histórico y otras atracciones como La Mitad del
Mundo. Tanto a la salida como a la llegada nuestro equi-
paje fue inspeccionado para checar que no trajéramos
algo que pudiera afectar el hábitat del archipiélago.
Día 1
Una vez pasado el filtro nos recibió la persona encar-
gada de nuestro barco y un autobús nos llevó al muelle.
Ya ahí, con chalecos salvavidas puestos, nos dirigimos en
una panga al Evolution, un barco con piso demadera y un
toque clásico en su línea y decoración. A bordo pasaría-
mos la siguiente semana en un ambiente de aventura y
descubrimientos asombrosos.
Después de instalarnos y saborear una rica comida, el
grupo se dividió en dos para hacer un recorrido en panga y
observar la fauna consistente en piqueros de patas azules,
leones e iguanas marinas, sobre todo. Esto sería solamen-
te una probadita, ya que el día siguiente habríamos de ver
tantas iguanas marinas en Punta Espinosa, en la isla Fer-
nandina, que tuvimos que caminar con sumo cuidado para
no pisarlas. Entre un paisaje rocoso, las miradas torvas de
los reptiles nos remitían a eras prehistóricas, como si el
tiempo se hubiera detenido. Las iguanas, ajenas a nuestra
curiosidad, no reparaban en nuestra presencia. Vimosmu-

dieron una charla sobre lo que veríamos al día siguiente.
