I
n perfect weather with the blue sky lit by a
very generous sun, the 34 boats enrolled in
the Riviera Nayarit International Marlin
and Tuna Fishing Tournament (the heir of the
52-year old Vallarta Fishing Tournament) sailed
from July 13 to 15 in the peaceful waters of the
Bahía de Banderas in search of marlin and tuna,
which, against all forecasts, broke all fishing
records for weights of marlin landed. Without a
doubt, it was a total success.
Surprises were the order of hte second day
when fisherman Mario Becerra landed a 293.8
kg marlin, breaking the record set here five
years ago when the scale registered a specimen
of hte same type weighing in a 210 kilograms.
Mario, after battling for five hours with the fish
felt sure of taking first place, even though, he
fell short by just 6.2 kilos of the Extra Fish in
One prize of another ten thousand dollars.
However, an even though everyone was certain
that he would be the winner, on the Sunday,
there was another blow of surprise that left
everybody open mouthed in amazement.
Not even the most visionary fortuneteller
could have predicted that Alejandro Herrera,
better known as the
Doctor
would not only have
more strength and patience to get the better of
a marlin and weighed in at an incredible figure
of 322.300 kilos and 137 centimeters in length,
but that he could have done so in just 2 hours of

roso, los 34 barcos inscritos en el 1er. Torneo
Internacional de Pesca de Marlin y Atún Riviera
Nayarit (heredero del Torneo de Pesca Vallarta con 52
años de antigüedad) navegaron del 13 al 15 de julio
las apacibles aguas de Bahía de Banderas en busca de
marlins y atunes. Contra todos los pronósticos,
hicieron añicos los records de peso en cuanto a mar-
lin se refiere. Sin duda, una fiesta exitosa.
La sorpresas estuvieron a la orden desde el
segundo día, cuando el pescador Mario Becerra logró
capturar un marlin de 293.800 kilos, el cual rompió el
récord registrado en la zona hace apenas cinco años,
cuando la báscula indicó que un ejemplar del mismo
tipo había pesado 210 kilogramos. Mario, tras bata-
llar por más de cinco horas con el pez, se sintió el
seguro ganador del primer lugar, aunque se haya
quedado a sólo 6.200 del premio Extra Fish in One, de
10,000 dólares. Sin embargo, aun cuando todos
estaban seguros de que sería el ganador, el domingo
ocurrió otro sorpresivo
golpe de asombro
que dejó a
todos boquiabiertos.
Ni el adivino más visionario habría podido pro-
nosticar que Alejandro Herrera, mejor conocido
como
El Médico
, no sólo tuviera la fuerza y la
paciencia para dominar a un marlin que terminó
pesando la increíble cifra de 322.300 kilos y con 147
centímetros de contorno, sino que además lo
hubiera hecho en tan sólo dos horas de intensa
