Then the mountains reach the sea, the east coast
begins with jungle-covered mountains and sandy
bays framed by coconut palms at the foot of the peaks
where the clouds are trapped.
We pass by a series of capes, Mala Pascua, Punta
Tuna, Punta Yeguas, where the Cuchilla de Panduras
mountains play with the sea, creating bays and beau-
tiful beaches, and discover Puerto Yabucoa (Yabucoa
Port), situated on the estuary of Tres Ríos, where
fields of sugar cane end.
Fantasy Islands
In the midst of this immense plain, planted with
coconut palms, a large urban development has been
established that includes amarina and golf course, two
hotels, casino, banks and homes. It is called Palmas del
Mar. The architecture is Spanish-Mediterranean style,
the yachts are extraordinary, the people are beautiful,
and it looks like a true fantasy island.
The small fishing village of Naguabo is located on a
small bay, well protected by a rocky peninsula and the
SantiagoKey, that is inhabitedby a colony ofmacaques.
The small town has a certain charm, with its ele-
gant homes and its wharf, where you can breathe in
the sea breeze at sundown, when the sun illuminates
the rocks and along Huamacao beach.
Isla de Vieques (Vieques Island) is just 10 miles
from here, but we did not have time to visit it or
Culebra Island. We sailed around the peninsula from

Islas de fantasía
En ese inmenso llano sembrado de palmas de coco se ha
instalado una gran urbanización, con su marina y golf,
dos hoteles, casino, bancos, casas se trata de Palmas del
Mar. Su arquitectura es de estilo ibero-mediterráneo,
los yates son soberbios, la gente hermosa, y parece una
auténtica isla de la fantasía.
El pequeño puerto de pescadores de Naguabo se
aloja en el fondo de una pequeña bahía, bien protegido
por una península rocosa y el Cayo Santiago está habi-
tado por una colonia de macacos.
El pueblito tiene un cierto encanto con sus elegan-
tes casas y su malecón, donde se respira la brisa del mar
en el atardecer, cuando el sol alumbra las rocas y la lar-
ga playa de Humacao.
La Isla de Vieques se encuentra a tan sólo 10 millas
de aquí pero por falta de tiempo no pudimos conocerla
ni tampoco la de Culebra. Contorneamos la península de
la base naval de Roossevelt Roads, una de las bases más
grandes del mundo, que cuenta con una población mili-
tar de 2,500 soldados y otros tantos civiles.
Al final del día llegamos a la encantadora marina de
Puerto del Rey, con una capacidad para albergar 750
barcos, la más grande de la isla y tal vez del Caribe, con
