Bordeando la Isla
En nuestro último día de navegación bordeamos la pe-
nínsula noreste de la isla donde se encuentran Puerto
Real y Playa Fajardo, los cuales ofrecen servicios de ma-
rina. El ferry sale de su puerto y a lo largo de la costa hay
marinas, como Villa Marina y Puerto Chico, y la del
Wyndham El Conquistador Resort, con su hotel y sober-
bio golf en las colinas.
Cruzamos las aguas tranquilas de Las Croabas, pro-
tegidas por varias islas, para contornear la Cabeza de
San Juan, esa pequeña península de reserva natural con
sus lagunas y playas protegidas como La Escondida, Se-
ven Seas o El Convento.
Empiezan entonces bellas playas tocadas por las
fuertes olas del Atlántico o protegidas por cabos o alo-
jadas en hermosas bahías con su arena blanca y bordea-
da por edificios de departamentos o por hoteles.
Luquillo es la pequeña Saint-Tropez de la costa no-
reste, con su vida nocturna intensa. En Loiza Aldea se vi-
sita su iglesia que data de 1646, y pasando Punta
Cangrejos empieza la costa del Gran San Juan, con sus
condominios y hoteles a la orilla del mar: Pine Grove, Is-
la Verde, Ocean Park, Condado, Miramar, La Concha y un
conjunto de playas acogedoras y muy pobladas.
Exploramos la Cordillera Central en tres días para des-
cubrir pueblos escondidos, helechos arborescentes que

largest bases, with a military population of 2500 and about
the same number of civilians. At the end of the day we
arrived at the charming, 750-slip Puerto del Rey marina,
the largest on the island and perhaps in the Caribbean. The
town has restaurants, shops, banks and all necessary boat
services, including major repair shops.
Bordering the Island
We startedour last day sailing around thenortheast peninsu-
la of the island. Both Puerto Real (Real Port) and Playa Fajardo
(Fajardo Beach) have marinas. The ferry set sail from the port
and along the coast are marinas, including Villa Marina and
Puerto Chico, and theWyndhamEl Conquistador Resort, with
itshotel and its extraordinarygolf course inthehills.We cross
the tranquil waters of Las Croabas, protected by several
islands, to sail around Cabeza de San Juan, a small peninsula
that is a natural reserve, with lagoons and protected beaches,
including Escondida, Seven Seas and El Convento.
Then we came upon a whole series of beautiful beach-
es lashed by the strong waves of the Atlantic, protected by
capes, or sheltered in beautiful, white sand bays that are
framed by apartment houses and hotels.
Luquillo, with its intense nightlife, is the small Saint
Tropez of the northeast coast. In Loíza Aldea there are
churches dating from 1646. Once you pass Punta Cangrejos
(Cangrejos Point) the coast of Greater San Juan begins, with
condominiums and hotels at the edge of the sea, including
Pine Grove, Isla Verde, Ocean Park, Condado, Miramar, La
Concha and a complex of cozy, very popular beaches.
