las olas. Tomamos rumbo a la Marina de Ponce, que ofre-
ce todos los servicios y donde atracamos para conocer
la aristocrática Ponce.
Creada en el siglo XVI, la ciudad prosperó realmente
con la caña de azúcar, café y ganadería, volviéndose una
ciudad importante en el XIX, adornándose de elegantes
edificios, como la Catedral de Guadalupe, teatros y par-
ques. Hoy en día es una hermosa ciudad muy animada
con su vida nocturna.
La Costa Este
A la salida del sol zarpamos hacia Playa Salinas, famosa
por ser el mejor refugio para los veleros que navegan en
el Caribe, excelente anclaje en caso de huracán gracias a
su colección de pequeñas islas y canales en el manglar
de aguas profundas.
Exploramos Bahía de Jobos, protegida por 15 cayos y
rodeada demanglares, considerada como el mejor refugio
para el manatí, pero sólo pudimos ver unos delfines.
Llegamos a Puerto Arroyo, quemarca el final de los lla-
nos del sur donde se hacen las grandes plantaciones de
caña de azúcar. Conserva algunos edificios, testigos de su
gloria pasada, y delimita el cambio de relieve y vegetación.
Las montañas llegan al mar y empieza la Costa Este,
con sus montes cubiertos de selva, sus bahías de arena
bordeadas de cocotales al pie de los picos donde se ato-
ran las nubes.
Pasamos una serie de cabos: Mala Pascua, Punta
Tuna, Punta Yeguas (donde las montañas de la Cuchilla

depth of the water makes it possible to sail without prob-
lems through this very unusual place. We followed the
coast of protected Bahía de Guayanilla (Guayanilla Bay), with
its mangroves and the coral coast beaten by the waves, to
Marina de Ponce, which has a full range of services. We
docked there in order to tour aristocratic Ponce.
Founded in the 16 th century, the city prospered
because of sugar cane, coffee and livestock. It became a
very important city in the 19 th century, adorned with ele-
gant buildings like the impressive Guadalupe Cathedral, a
theater and parks. Today it is a beautiful city, colorful and
very much alive, with restaurants, nightlife and the tran-
quil rhythms of the provinces.
East Coast
When the sun rose, we set sail eastward, passing Playa
Salinas (Salinas Beach), famous as the refuge of sailboats
navigating the Caribbean, and an excellent place to anchor
in case of a hurricane, thanks to a collection of small
islands and canals in the deep water mangrove.
We explored Bahía de Jobos (Jobos Bay), protected by 15
keys and surrounded bymangroves. It is considered to be the
best refuge for themanatee but we only saw some dolphins.
We arrived in Puerto Arroyo (Arroyo Port), which is the
last of two southern plains where the large sugar cane
plantations are located. There are still some buildings that
are a testament to its glorious past and that mark the
change in the landscape and vegetation.
