Más allá de su evidente belleza, la historia de la
escalinata es casi tan compleja como la de
Spartacus
(en la versión de Stanley Kubrick). En primer lugar, los
estadunidenses se refieren a ella como

, puesto que fue construida para celebrar el tra-
tado de paz entre Francia y España para unir a la iglesia
Trinità dei Monti
, bajo influencia francesa con la Emba-
jada de España. El proyecto tomó desde su concepción
hasta su construcción casi 200 años y en él estuvieron
involucrados dos Papas (Gregorio XIII y Clemente XI),
diplomáticos franceses e incluso, el cardenal Mazari-
no, italiano de nacimiento, educado en Roma y suce-
sor del cardenal Richelieu. Es decir, para construir 135
escalones fue necesaria la intervención del Vaticano y
las cortes española y francesa.
Ya desde ahí, su historia se antoja lo suficien-
temente intrincada como para convertirse en guion
de película de Bernardo Bertolucci (otro director que
usó la escalinata como locación en su película

Beyond its evident beauty, the history of la Es-
calinata is almost as complex as the one of Sparta-
cus (in the Stanley Kubrick version). In the first
place, Americans refer to it as The Spanish steps,
since it was built to celebrate the peace treaty be-
tween France and Spain to unite the church
Trinità
dei Monti
, under French influence with the embassy
of Spain. The project took from its inception until
its construction almost 200 years, and on it were
involved two Popes (Gregorius XIII and Clement XI),
French diplomats and even, the Mazarin Cardinal,
Italian by birth, educated in Roma and successor to
the Cardinal Richelieu. Thismeans, that to build 135
stair steps it was necessary the involvement of the
Vatican and the Spanish and French courts.
Even from this, its history hints to be suf-
ficiently complex as to become a movie script of
Bernardo Bertolucci (other director that used the
staircase as a location in his movie Besieged of
