El
Canis lupus iItalicus
, lobo italiano o lobo de los
Apeninos es una subespecie de lobo gris que habita
en los bosques de Italia, en años recientes también
ha sido visto en el sur de Francia, Suiza y en algunas
partes de España.
Es de talla mediana, los machos pesan entre 30 y
35 kg mientras que las hembras de 20 a 25 kg. Mide
de 100 a 140 cm, su altura es de aproximadamente
50 a 70 cm. Su color oscila entre el gris y el marrón,
aunque hay algunos especímenes negros que han
sido vistos en la Toscana recientemente. Tiene ex-
tremidades largas y son grandes corredores, pueden
cubrir más de 30 km al trote.
Cazador nocturno, se alimenta principalmente
de mamíferos de tamaño medio como ciervos y jaba-
líes, cuando escasean este tipo de animales también
puede consumir especies pequeñas como conejos o
liebres. Su sentido más desarrollado es el olfato, pue-

, Italian Wolf or Wolf of
the Apennines is a sub-species of the Grey wolf
that inhabits the forests of Italy, on recent years

It is medium in size, the males weigh between

to 25 kg. Measures form 100 to 140 cm, its height is

possesses long limbs and they are great runners,

Night hunter, it feeds mainly of medium
sized mammals like stags or wild boars, when
this kind of animals is scarce it can also con-
sume small species like rabbits or hares. Its
most sharp sense is the sense of smell, it can
spot a prey one mile away. It consumes from
1.5 to 3 kg of meat per day. Due to the scarci-
ty of big preys, the Italian wolves are usually
smaller than average.
