Tras el descubrimiento de América en 1492, Sevilla
se convirtió en el centro económico del imperio espa-
ñol. Los Reyes Católicos fundaron la Casa de Contrata-
ción, desde donde se dirigían y contrataban los viajes,
controlaban las riquezas que entraban de América y,
junto con la Universidad de Mercaderes, regulaban las
relaciones con el Nuevo Mundo.
Florecimiento multicultural
En el siglo XVI, Sevilla experimentó un gran desa-
rrollo y se construyeron algunos de los edificios más
importantes del Centro Histórico. La ciudad llegó a ser
un centro multicultural muy importante, lo que ayu-
daría al florecimiento de las artes, coincidiendo con su
momento artístico más brillante: el Barroco.
Se vio afectada por la crisis del siglo XVI, lo que
significó una decadencia económica y demográfica, al
tiempo que la navegación por el Guadalquivir se difi-
cultaba cada vez más, hasta que el monopolio comer-
cial y sus instituciones se trasladaron a Cádiz.
After the discovery of America in 1492, Seville
became the economic center of the Spanish Empire.
The Catholic Kings founded the “House of Contracts”,
from where all journeys were hired and directed, all
the wealth coming from America was collected and
all the relations with the new world were directed
alongside with the University of Merchants.
Multi-Cultural blossoms
In the 16th Century, Seville experimented a great
development and some of the most important buil-
dings in the Historic Center were built. The city be-
came a very important multi-cultural center, which
also helped with the blossoming of the arts, coinci-
dentally being itsmost brilliant time: The Baroque.
It was affected by the 16th century crisis, which
meant an economical and demographical decay,
while sailing through the Guadalquivir River was
getting harder every time, until the commercial mo-
nopoly and its institutions moved to Cadiz.
