Barrio de Santa Cruz
Caminamos un poco más y nos encontramos con
el Palacio Arzobispal, lugar de residencia de obispos y
arzobispos de las sedes episcopales, además de mili-
tares y nobles. En fechas actuales es donde tiene su
residencia el Cardenal de Sevilla.
Ubicado al lado de la Giralda, en la céntrica Plaza
Virgen de los Reyes, plaza donde acontece la salida de
la Catedral de todas las cofradías durante la Semana
Santa, y que también es una puerta hacia el barrio de
la Santa Cruz, que es a donde nos dirigimos. Esta tiene
su origen en la antigua Judería sevillana, cuando el rey
Fernando III de Castilla conquistó la ciudad, para con-
centrarse en Sevilla la segunda comunidad judía más
importante de España.
Tras la expulsión de los judíos en 1483, este barrio
que ocupaba lo que es el Barrio de Santa Cruz y San Bar-
tolomé, cayó en picada hasta que a principios del siglo
XIX decidieron llevar a cabo la reurbanización del barrio,
logrando su estado actual gracias a esa iniciativa.
Hoy en día es un lugar con muchísima historia. Aquí
mismo y en la plaza de la Santa Cruz pudimos admirar la
Cruz de Forja, realizada por Sebastián Conde en el año de
1692, situado en el centro del jardín que decora la plaza.
The Neighborhood of Santa Cruz
Walking a little further we find ourselves with
the Archiepiscopal Palace, a place of residence for
Bishops and Archbishops of the Episcopal hosts,
aside from military and novelty. This is where the
Cardinal of Seville lives till this day.
Located on the side of the Giralda, on the Vir-
gen de los Reyes centric plaza, this is where all the
other guilds gather and depart during the Holy
Week, this is also an access gate to the Santa Cruz
neighborhood and that’s where we are heading. This
gate has its origin in the ancient Sevillian Jewish
town, when King Fernando III of Castilla conquered
the city, to be concentrated in Seville and the 2nd
most important Jewish community in Spain.
After the Jewish exile in 1483, this neighborhood
that occupiedSantaCruz andSanBartolomeneighbor-
hoods, fell straight to the floor until the beginnings of
the19thcenturywhereanurbanrestructurewasmade
of the neighborhood andmaking it what it is today.
Nowadays, thisplacehas a lot of history. Righthere
and on the Santa Cruz plazawewere able to admire the
Cruz de Forja, made by Sebastian Conde on the year
1692, located at the center of the garden in the plaza.
