Conquistada por Simon de Montfort en el siglo
XIII, es anexada al reino de Francia y sus fortificacio-
nes fueron mejoradas, fortaleza inconquistable a la
frontera entre Francia y Aragón. El tratado de los
Pirineos que ata el Roussillon a Francia en 1659 hace
perder su importancia estratégica y la gente trans-
fiere su residencia en la ciudad baja, a la orilla del río
Aude, llamada La Bastide, la ciudadela decae, se
deteriora hasta ser restaurada al final del siglo XIX.
En el centro se eleva el castillo, auténtica fortale-
za rodeada por un foso, alrededor del cual se amon-
tonan las casas acariciadas por los callejones que se
pierden, encerrados dentro de la primera muralla,
ella misma protegida por la segunda muralla, ambos
con sus contrafuertes, sus torreones, sus puertas
monumentales.
Es un verdadero paseo en el tiempo, llevando la
imaginación por las viejas piedras habitadas por res-

its fortified towers, its monumental doors.
