El castillo de la Berbie (Bisbia en occitano, que
significa obispado), uno de los castillos más antiguos
y mejores conservados de Francia, es hoy sede del
museo Toulouse-Lautrec, famoso pintor nativo de
Albi. La importante colección representa su emble-
mática obra que varía según las épocas de su vida. La
arquitectura de ese castillo del siglo XIII se caracteri-
za por una torre del homenaje flanqueada por cuatro
torres de ángulo, anchos muros de 7 m, murallas, con
sus interiores remodelados al estilo renacentista y
jardines diseñados en 1678.
El bien conservado casco antiguo, de ladrillos y
tejas rojas, acoge con su atmósfera medieval e invita
a descubrir: la colegiata y el claustro de San Salvy
(474-584) que asocian el románico y el gótico; las
casas señoriales (siglo XV-XVI) con sus torres redon-
das o cuadradas, sus logias o galerías a la italiana,
sus ajimeces, sus patios, testigos de la riqueza de la
ciudad debido al comercio del “pastel”, ese pequeño
lápiz de color utilizado por artistas y especialmente
el azul indeleble que se crea a partir de la planta
“Isatis Tintoria” presente en la región y que iba a con-
tribuir a su enriquecimiento en el siglo XII; la plaza
del mercado, los callejones con sus cazas medieva-
les, el Puente Viejo que data de 1035.
Cerca de Albi, visitar los encantadores pueblos
medievales que dan vida a la campiña donde las uvas
producen los excelentes vinos regionales: Gaillac con
sus vinos y la abadía de Saint Michel; Cordes sur Ciel,
ciudad medieval alzada en 1222 sobre una peña, con
calles empinadas, puertas fortificadas, palacios góti-
cos y sus excelentes hoteles y restaurantes como
“Le Grand Ecuyer”; Castelnau-de-Montmiral y su
plaza de arcadas; Cahuzac-sur-Vere con sus casas de
piedras.
