Lourdes and the Pyrenees
Our tour in the southwest tookus toLourdes, beautiful
city dominated by its strong castle at the foot of the
Pyrenees. On February the 11th of 1858, the Virgin
Mary, in a cave, made an apparition to Bernadette
Soubirous while taking her lambs for a walk.
Little by little the apparitions attract people, but
only Bernadette sees her, talks to her until onMarch
1 st the first miracle occurs when Catalina Latapie
cures her dislocated armgetting it wet in the spring
water. In the 18 apparitions that took place until the
16 th of July the sick started to drink the spring
water or bathing in it and many miracles occurred.
Illnesses resilient to the best treatments disap-
peared for ever.
A chapel was built; Bernadette takes the habit in
Nevers the 29th of July of 1866, where her life will
end in 1879, while Lourdes becomes a very impor-
tant pilgrimage center in the Christian world. The
sanctuary impresses by its mystical beauty with its
basilica raised on the rock that accommodates the
cave and the spring, the Gave River which crosses it,
the buildings and hospitals of the congregations,
the processions, the underground basilica, the
Marian procession in the nights followed by the
mass in the cave.
But Lourdes is something more. Located at the
door of the valley that leads to Argelès-Gazost we
find numerous places like Cauterets or Barèges de
Bigorre, where people comes to “take the thermal
spring”, with its elegant constructions, testimony
of other times and where Napoleon III went.

Nuestro recorrido en el suroeste nos llevó a Lourdes,
hermosa ciudad dominada por su castillo fuerte al
pie de los Pirineos. El 11 de febrero de 1858 la Virgen
María, en una cueva, se apareció a Bernadette
Soubirous mientras paseaba sus borregos.
Poco a poco las apariciones atraen a la gente,
pero sólo Bernadette la ve, habla con ella hasta que el
primero de marzo ocurre el primer milagro cuando
Catalina Latapie cura su brazo dislocado mojándolo
en el agua del manantial. En las 18 apariciones que
tuvieron lugar hasta el 16 de julio los enfermos
empezaban a tomar el agua del manantial o bañarse
en ella y ocurrieron muchos milagros. Enfermedades
resistentes a los mejores tratamientos desaparecie-
ron para siempre.
Se construye una capilla, Bernadette toma el hábi-
to en Nevers el 29 de julio de 1866, donde terminará su
vida en 1879, mientras Lourdes se vuelve un centro de
peregrinaciónmuy importante en el mundo cristiano. El
santuario impresiona por su bellezamística con su basí-
lica alzada sobre el peñón que aloja la gruta y el manan-
tial, el río Gave que lo atraviesa, los edificios y
hospitales de las congregaciones, las procesiones, la
basílica subterránea, la procesiónmariana en las noches
seguida por la misa en la gruta.
Pero Lourdes es algo más. Situado a la puerta del
valle que lleva a Argelès-Gazost encontramos nume-
rosos lugares como Cauterets o Bagères de Bigorre,
donde la gente viene a “tomar las aguas termales”,
con sus elegantes construcciones, testimonios de
otros tiempos y adonde acudía Napoleón III.
