El puente viejo, al pie de la puerta Narbonesa, lleva
a la Bastide Saint Louis, antiguamente protegida por su
muralla del siglo XIV, que se adorna de hermosos case-
ríos, su fabulosa catedral de estilo gótico, su mercado
y su Canal du Midi. Carcassonne es en realidad dos ciu-
dades llenas de encanto, diferentes, separadas, que
permiten pasear en dos mundos distintos.
El Canal del Midi
Obra excepcional realizada por Pierre-Paul Riquet en el
siglo XVII con su propio dinero y las donaciones que con-
seguía, el Canal du Midi permite navegar desde el
Atlántico hasta el Mediterráneo, uniendo el río Garonne
en Toulouse con el Mediterráneo.
Un ingenioso sistema de reserva de agua permi-
te alimentarlo, desviando las aguas hacia los dos
mares desde una presa en la Montaña Negra, crean-
do el lago de Saint Férréol.
Su construcción empezó en 1667 y se inauguró el
24 de mayo de 1682, dos años después de la muerte
de Riquet. Los barcos se jalaban con caballos que
caminaban por el sendero de jala, y se tardaba cuatro
días para recorrer los 240 km del canal, que atraviesa
un relieve que se eleva a 190 m, gracias a 63 esclusas.
Es posible rentar “peniches”, esos barcos de
fondo plano, y recorrer el canal a su ritmo, desde la
ciudad de Setes, con sus lagunas hasta Toulouse.

The Canal du Midi

Riquet in the XVIIth century with his own money
and the donations he was able to get, the Canal du
Midi allows to navigate from the Atlantic to the
Mediterranean, merging the Garonne River in
Toulouse with the Mediterranean.
An ingenious water reserve system allows feed it,
detouring the waters towards the two seas from a dam
inBlackMountain, creating the lake of Saint Ferréol.

boats with a flat bottom, and to travel across the
channel at its own rhythm, from the city of Seth,
