Lagoa Verde, a turquoise in the sea
As it name says, the water here is of a crystal
clear green, worth of a precious stone. The color the
water reflects as a mirror the abundant vegetation
that adorns the coast.
Paraty, the path to the gold
Paraty is located at the south of the Green Coast,
in the Bay of Ilha Grande, between Rio de Janeiro
and Sao Paulo. It is located at 330 kilometers from
Sao Paulo and at 240 kilometers fromRio de Janeiro.
The colonial city of Paraty was very important for
the Portuguese colonizers.
The first settlements were located aside of the
river that flows in the coast and divides the city in
two parts. Close to 1640, the native Indians that
lived here were moved and the city was built in the
same place where it is located today.
Despite of being forced to abandon this place,
the natives left their mark in the city through their
culture. The word “Paraty” means “river of fish” or
“place where the fish lives” in the Tupi language of
the natives. The Guaianás Indians called like this
the place where the city was raised.
The colonial city was very important in
the XVIIth century due to the discovery of the
Gerais Mines. It was the obligatory passing of
the valuable merchandise in its way to be sent
by ship to Portugal.
During this period, some beautiful residential
homes were built here and Paraty turned into the
second most important city in Brazil. The splen-
dor of this time may be appreciated today in the
colonial constructions very well preserved and
in the way that the habitants maintain and show
their history and culture.
Paraty is still preserved almost intact after its
long history. The municipality established a rigid
legislation that prevents the predatory tourism.
There are no department buildings in Paraty and its
growth is oriented by a detailed urban planning.

Como su nombre lo dice, el agua aquí es de un
color verde cristalino, digno de una piedra preciosa.
El color del agua refleja como un espejo la abundante
vegetación que adorna la costa.
Paraty, el camino del oro
Paraty está ubicada al sur de la Costa Verde,
en la Bahía de Ilha Grande, entre Rio de Janeiro y
Sao Paulo. Se encuentra a 330 kilómetros de Sao
Paulo y a 240 kilómetros de Rio de Janeiro. La ciu-
dad colonial de Paraty fue muy importante para los
colonizadores portugueses.
Los primeros asentamientos se ubicaron a un
costado del río que desemboca en la costa y divide
la ciudad en dos partes. Cerca de 1640, los indios
nativos que vivían aquí fueron desplazados y la ciu-
dad se construyó en el mismo lugar en donde aún
se encuentra hoy día.
A pesar de haber sido forzados a abandonar este
sitio, los nativos dejaron su huella en la ciudad a través
de su cultura. La palabra “Paraty” significa “río de
peces” o “lugar en donde habitan los peces” en la len-
gua tupi de los nativos. Los indios Guaianás llamaban
de esta forma al sitio en donde se erigió la ciudad.
La ciudad colonial fue muy importante en el siglo
XVII debido al descubrimiento de las Minas Gerais. Se
convirtió en el paso obligado de la valiosamercancía en
su camino para ser enviada en barco hasta Portugal.
Durante este periodo, hermosas casas residen-
ciales comenzaron a construirse aquí y Paraty se
convirtió en nada menos que la segunda ciudad más
importante enBrasil. El esplendor de esta época puede
verse aún en las construcciones coloniales muy bien
preservadas y en la forma en la que los habitantes
resguardan y muestran su historia y cultura.
Paraty sigue conservándose casi intacta después de
su larga historia. La municipalidad estableció una legis-
lación rígida que impide el turismo predatorio. En Paraty
nohay edificios de departamentos y su crecimiento está
orientado por un detallado planeamiento urbano.
