Angra dos Reis, la bahía de los reyes
Los primeros exploradores portugueses que lle-
garon a Brasil adoptaron la costumbre de nombrar
cada lugar que descubrían de acuerdo al día en el que
sucedía este acontecimiento.
De esta manera surgió, por ejemplo, el nombre de
Rio de Janeiro. Inicialmente, los portugueses pensa-
ron, equivocadamente, que la bahía de Rio de Janeiro
-con sus abundantes riscos e islotes- era un río. Su
descubrimiento se llevó a cabo el 1 de enero de 1502,
lo cual determinó su nombre. Curiosamente, esa
misma expedición cometió el mismo error días más
tarde al llegar a Angra.
Al cruzar el canal entre la costa e Ilha Grande (Isla
Grande), la expedición no se percató de que se en-
contraban pasando frente a una isla, pensando que
ésta estaba unida al continente. Fue así como, cre-
yendo que habían llegado al final de la bahía (“angra”
significa ensenada), decidieron bautizar este lugar
como Angra dos Reis por haber sido descubierta el
día de los Reyes Magos.
Hoy en día, Angra es conocida principalmente por
sus marinas y por ser el punto de embarque para ir a
Ilha Grande. La Bahía de Angra cuenta con más de 300
islas, cada una más hermosa que la anterior. Su espe-
cial composición (llena de pequeños islotes y bahías) la
convierten en un hermoso laberinto verde, ideal para
ser recorrido en una embarcación.

The first Portuguese explorers that arrived to
Brazil adopted the habit of naming each place
they discovered according to the day in which
this event happened.
This way emerged, for example, the name of
Rio de Janeiro. Initially, the Portuguese thought,
wrongly, that the bay of Rio de Janeiro -with its
abundant cliffs and islets- was a river. Its discov-
ery took place the 1st of January of 1502, which
determined its name. Curiously, that same expe-
dition made the same mistake some days later
when they arrived to Angra.
Crossing the canal between the coast and Ilha
Grande (Great Island), the expedition did not realize
that they were passing in front of an island, think-
ing that this was joined to the continent. It was like
this that, thinking that they have arrived to the end
of the bay (“angra”means inlet), they decided to bap-
tize this place as Angra dos Reis because it was dis-
covered the day of the Three Wise Men.
Nowadays, Angra is mainly well known for its
marinas and for being the embarkation point to go
to Ilha Grande. The Bay of Angra counts with more
than 300 islands, each one more beautiful than the
previous one. It’s so unique composition (full of
little islets and bays) turn it into a beautiful green
labyrinth, ideal to be toured in a vessel.
