planicie árida de donde surge un insólito vapor,
como brotando de las cavernas del diablo, in-
vadiendo el cielo para conquistarlo y sin potencia
para alcanzar el sol.
En este lugar el río Zambezi trae una gran cantidad
de agua desde Angola donde las lluvias alimentan su
manantial y cae en esa gran fisura de 1.7 km de largo
con tan solo 200 a 300 m de ancho y con una profun-
didad de 90 a 107 m. El ruido era impresionante y el
agua se precipitaba con tanta fuerza que rebotaba
sobre la pared de ese impresionante cañón, creando
ese vapor que subía, inventando una lluvia al revés,
que venía de abajo hacia arriba, para regar todo el
entorno. Un insólito mundo se ha inventado gracias a
una falla en esa meseta.
Un promedio de 550 000 metros cúbicos de agua
se vierten dentro de esa enorme garganta cada minu-
to, mientras que en la temporada de crecimiento del
río, entre marzo y mayo, hasta 5 millones de metros
cúbicos por minuto pasan por la catarata, creando un
extravagante mundo de vapor. Es imposible acercar-
se al borde del acantilado sin quedar completamente
empapado. Esa enorme fisura que forma las cataratas
es el principio del cañón que camina en zigzag por las
lomas, cortándolas y en donde corre con rabia el río

The Zambesi River brings a gargantuan amount
of water fromAngola, were the rains help to feed the
spring. The water then falls through a fissure 1.7 km
long and only 200 to 300 meters wide, and 90 to 107
meters deep. The noise that the water produced as
it flowed down was massive, and flow down with
such force that it would hit against the sides of the
canyon, creating the water vapor that in turn would
create a cloud that would swell and release water to,
once again, flow downstream.
A strange world has been created thanks to
a fault in this steppe. An average of 550,000 cu-
bic meters of water is poured inside this massive
space everyminute. More astonishingly, during the
months of March and May, a staggering 5,000,000
cubic meters of water per minute pass through
this space, creating a world of vapor that envelops
everything in sight. It is impossible to stand near
this monument of nature and not get completely
