Mud volcanoes
The Gobustan landscape reminds one of the Mar-
tian scenery in recent pictures, those taken by
NASA’s Curiosity rover. The semi-desert climate is
home to other attractions that make this reserve
on of the most sought-out places in the region: the
mud volcanoes (close to 300 of them). Contrary to
what travelers expect, the water of these volca-
noes is cold, and various medicinal properties are
attributed to it. This had led visitors to cover them-
selves head to toe in mud in search of its benefits.
Amusical stone
It is possible to find in Gobustan a musical stone
named “Gaval Dash.” It has been used since time
immemorial as a ceremonial instrument. Today,
local musicians combine the sound of the stone,
similar to that of a tambourine, with other in-
struments and songs.
Volcanes de Lodo
El paisaje de Gobustán recuerda al planeta marte
en las fotografías recientes, tomadas por el
Curio-
sitty
de la NASA. La reserva con su clima semide-
sértico guarda otros atractivos que la convierten
en uno de los lugares más visitados por los turis-
tas: los volcanes de lodo (alrededor de 300). Con-
trario a lo que se pudiera pensar, el agua de estos
volcanes es fría y se les atribuyen propiedades
medicinales, por lo que los visitantes se embadur-
nan de lodo buscando sus beneficios.
Una piedra musical
Es posible encontrar en Gobustán una piedramusical na-
tural llamada
Gaval Dash
. Ésta es usada desde tiempos
inmemoriales como un instrumento ceremonial, aún
hoy, los músicos azerbaiyanos tradicionales combinan
el sonido especial de la piedra , similar al de tamborín o
pandereta, con otros instrumentos y/o cantos.
