Ganja, tradición y

naturaleza.

Es la segunda ciudad en importancia industrial y cul-

tural de Azerbaiyán, con una población de 820,400

habitantes. Los historiadores creen que el nombre de

la ciudad proviene del persa moderno ganj’, que sig-

nifica tesoro o tesorería; lo que sugiere que la ciudad

ya existía en la historia preislámica y muy probable-

mente, data del siglo V a. C. En el 2013 ganó el título:

Capital Europea de la juventud 2016, que otorga el

Foro Europeo de la Juventud por un período de un año;

reconocida por la riqueza de su arquitectura: ruinas,

torres, puentes de los siglos XI –XII; los caravasares

que son un antiguo tipo de edificación, surgido a lo

largo de los principales caminos donde paraban las ca-

ravanas que hacían largos viajes por la ruta de la seda,

sitios religiosos (siglos XIV – XVII) la belleza de sus

paisajes y gastronomía. Uno de los lugares preferidos

de Ganja es el Mausoleo de Nizamí Ganjavi, célebre

figura de la literatura azerbaiyana, quien nació en esta

ciudad en el año 1141 y falleció en 1209.

itants. Historians believe that the name comes from

the modern Persian “ganj’”, which means “treasure,”

or “treasury.” This suggest that the city existed during

Pre-Islamic times and, quite probably, dates from the

5th century b.C. In 2013, it won the title of “European

Youth Capital 2016”, a prize given by the European

Youth Forum for a one-year period. It is recognized

by its architectural richness: ruins, towers, bridges,

all dating back to the 11th to 12th centuries; the Cara-

venserari, an ancient type of edifice, which dot the

main roads inwhich caravanswould stopduring their

long journeys through the Silk Road; religious sites

(14th to 17th centuries), the beauty of its landscapes

and gastronomy. One of the prefered places in the

Ganja is the Nizami Ganjavi Mausoleum, named after

a celebrated figure in azerbaiyani literature, who was

born in this city in1141, andwherehe expired in1209.
