l área de La Paz es conocida por los vientos Coro-
muel, considerándose como un gran evento de
los atardeceres del verano. El nombre de los vien-
tos proviene del pirata Cromwell, quien tras la corriente
de los mismos arribaba a la Bahía de La Paz. Estos vien-
tos llegan hasta las islas de Espíritu Santo y La Partida,
de 13 ensenadas a lo largo de la orilla occidental de las
dos islas.
Durante nuestra visita a La Paz llevamos a cabo un
maravilloso recorrido a través de la empresa de buceo y
snorkeling Fun Baja, localizada en la Marina Palmira. En el
trayecto, logramos ser testigos de uno de los escenarios
naturales más fascinantes del Mar de Cortés: la Isla Espí-
ritu Santo y Los Islotes.
En 1960, una base de marinos intentó establecerse en
la caleta El Candelero, llevando cabras en sus embarcacio-
nes. Después de luchar con las condiciones de la isla deci-
dieron partir y dejar las cabras ahí. Desde entonces, la cabra
salvaje forma parte de la fauna del lugar trayendo consigo
múltiples desventajas, debido a que ésta se alimenta prin-
cipalmente de la fauna endémica de Espíritu Santo.
La fauna de la isla se encuentra conformada por la lie-
bre negra, el barbisuri, la serpiente cascabel; entre las
aves hay tijereta, pelícano, gaviota, águila marina y pája-
ro bobo de patas azules o cafés. En su flora destacan: cac-
tus, visnaga, torote, mezquites, chamizo y mangle de
agua dulce. En los alrededores de Espíritu Santo se pue-
den encontrar varias especies de ballenas (orca, cachalo-
te, ballena azul, ballena piloto y ballena jorobada), así
como diversos tipos de delfines (moteado, bicolor y el
delfín común).

he La Paz area is traversed by the Coromuel
winds. Considered a great event during sum-
mer sunsets, the name of these winds comes
from the pirate Cromwell who, thanks to the cur-
rents of the same name, arrived in La Paz Bay. The
winds reach all the way to the islands of Espíritu
Santo and La Partida, each with 13 coves along their
eastern shores.
During our visit to La Paz we took a wonderful
tour with Fun Baja, a dive and snorkeling outfit
located in the Palmira Marina. On the trip, we wit-
nessed one of the most fascinating natural scenes
in the Sea of Cortez: the Espíritu Santo Island and
Los Islotes.
In 1960, marines tried to establish a base in El
Candelero cove and brought along goats. After bat-
tling the conditions of the island, they decided to
leave and left the goats behind. Since then, wild
goats are part of the fauna and this has become a
problem because they eat wildlife that is endemic
to Espíritu Santo.
The fauna includes black jackrabbit, the barbi-
suri and rattle snake. Among the bird species are
fork-tailed flycatchers, pelicans, seagulls, sea
eagles and brown- and blue-footed brown boobies.
Among the flora are cacti, viznaga, chamizo (ele-
phant tree), mesquite, torote and fresh water man-
groves. Near the island you can find some species
of whales (orca, sperm, blue and humpback) as well
as different types of dolphin (spotted, bicolor two-
colored and common).
