marvelous, exclusive hotel restaurant located on
the top of the Cerro de la Ballena, a place favored by
intellectuals and where it is good to see and be
seen and bump into someone that is well-known.
In Punta del Este we also admired the long
beaches of rolling golden dunes, the deep blue sea,
the Sauce Lagoon that reflects the pine forests,
and the Maldonado stream and its amazing estu-
ary filled with birds and where the charming town
of La Barra is located. The parrots liven the
ambiance, the sea lions swim among the rocks and
Punta Ballena, with its arid, Mediterranean air, is a
place of elegant mansions near the studio of the
Uruguayan artist Carlos Paez Vilaró.
In the marina, located opposite the Mansa
beach on the Río de la Plata, the Amura sailboat
rivaled in beauty with the most stunning yachts.
The southern point of the city is a nest of exclusive
houses lying under the shade of the blue church
and the lighthouse. On the Atlantic side the waves
crash harder and the bodies compete in perfection
and acquire the color of brown sugar. At night we
dined in La Bourgogne or the Blue Cheese.
Punta del Este is a star of the Uruguayan Riviera
and it beats the rhythm of the parties and the scan-
dals that fill the pages of gossipmagazines. Even so,
it is a place that has enormous charm.
Perito Moreno
Perito Moreno is a fabulous glacier in south
Patagonia, where the Andes meet the arid plains.
We flew to El Calafate and, after exploring these
plains and sailing along the border of the
Argentino Lake, where pink flamingoes search for
their food in the jade colored waters, we reached
the national park and lodged in the wonderful Los
Notros hotel, facing the glacier which descends
from the snowy peaks and slides slowly to the
bueno ser visto y encontrarse con alguien conocido,
lugar favorito de los intelectuales.
En Punta del Este admiramos también las largas
playas de onduladas dunas doradas, el mar azul pro-
fundo, la Laguna de Sauce que refleja los bosques de
pinos, el arroyo Maldonado y su insólito estuario
repleto de aves donde se aloja el encantador pueblo
de La Barra. Los pericos animan el ambiente, los leo-
nes marinos nadan entre las rocas y Punta Ballena,
con su aire árido y mediterráneo, es el hogar de rim-
bombantes casas, junto con el estudio del artista
uruguayo Carlos Páez Vilaró.
En la marina, situada al final de playa Mansa en el
Río de la Plata, el velero de Amura rivalizaba con los
más bellos yates. La punta sur de la ciudad es el refu-
gio de exclusivas casas a la sombra de la iglesia azul y
del faro. Del lado del Atlántico las olas estallan más
fuertes, los cuerpos compiten en perfección y color
azúcar morena. En la noche cenamos en La Bourgogne
o el Blue Cheese.
Punta del Este es la estrella de la Riviera urugua-
ya que palpita con los ecos de las fiestas o de los
escándalos que llenan las páginas de las revistas de
chismes, y sin embargo es un lugar que conserva un
enorme encanto.
Perito Moreno
Perito Moreno es un fabuloso glaciar al sur de la
Patagonia, donde Los Andes encuentran los llanos
áridos. Llegamos en avión a El Calafate y después de
recorrer esos llanos, bordeando el lago Argentino
donde los flamencos rosados buscan su comida en
las aguas color jade, llegamos al parque nacional. Nos
alojamos en el fabuloso hotel Los Notros, frente al
glaciar que baja de los picos nevados, deslizándose
lentamente hacia el lago Argentino.
La vista es espectacular, la blancura del hielo
contrasta con el bosque hundido entre las montañas
