impressive fracture, which takes place more or less
every four years and is an extravagant sight that
attracts people from around the world. In the spot
where it meets the Magallanes Peninsula it presses
hard against the rocks, separating the Brazo Chico
from the canal of ice flows, which always communi-
cates with the great lake. This phenomenon is what
makes the glacier act as a dam and the Brazo Chico
rises until the water’s pressure is such that it breaks
it. Because of its weight, the water digs a tunnel
below the ice, right were itmeetswith the land, until
the ice that melts below cannot support the weight
of theglacier and thedambreaks inagreat explosion
of ice and water, forming huge waves.
This spectacle can last four days and once the
level of the Brazo Chico reaches that of the lake the
waters become calm, the glacier continues to
advance until it finds itself again with the
Magallanes Peninsula and, little by little, the
waters of the Brazo Chico will rise again.
In the forest there are beautiful waterfalls and
nostros, those bushes of red flowers, adorn the
scenery, parrots fill the air with their calls and the
nights spent at the hotel are a cozy moment that
make the trip to PeritoMoreno one of great intensity.
Ushuaia
We reached Ushuaia by plane just in time to admire
themountains that formTierradel Fuegoand itsgla-
ciers and board the ferry that would take us to Punta
Arenas in Chile. The voyage was very hard, with
strongwinds and a cloudy skywith occasional snow.
The Beagle Channel offers safe but difficult sailing
and is populated by colonies of seals and penguins.

siempre se comunica con el gran lago. Ese fenómeno
provoca que el glaciar forme una represa y subse-
cuentemente el Brazo Chico sube de nivel hasta que
la presión del agua consiga romperla. Por su mismo
peso, el agua excava un túnel por debajo del hielo,
justo al encuentro de éste con la tierra, hasta que el
hielo que se derrite abajo no pueda soportar el peso
del glaciar y la presa se rompe en una gran explosión
de hielo y agua, provocando grandes olas.
Ese espectáculo puede durar cuatro días y cuan-
do el nivel del Brazo Chico alcanza el del lago, que las
aguas se tranquilizan, el glaciar sigue avanzando
hasta encontrarse de nuevo con la Península de
Magallanes, y poco a poco las aguas del Brazo Chico
subirán de nuevo.
En el bosque nacen hermosas cascadas, Los
Notros, esos arbustos de flor roja adornan el escena-
rio, los pericos llenan el aire con sus gritos y las vela-
das en el hotel son un acogedor momento que hace
del viaje al Perito Moreno uno de los más intensos.
Ushuaia
Llegamos a Ushuaia en avión, justo a tiempo para
admirar los montes que forman Tierra del Fuego, con
sus glaciares, y embarcarnos en el transbordador
que nos llevaba a Punta Arenas, en Chile. La travesía
fue muy difícil, con vientos muy fuertes y cielo
nublado con nevadas de vez en cuando. El Canal de
Beagle ofrece una navegación segura pero dura, y es
habitado por varias colonias de focas y pingüinos.
Pasamos las islas de Tierra del Fuego con un mar
muy agitado, como si cada ola nos fuera a tragar,
