Alacranes
L
a noche era clara y el cielo se mostraba lleno
de estrellas, estábamos en silencio a la espe-
ra de que la radio del barco Lucky Two sonara
para darnos el aviso de que el fuerte viento del sur
se había calmado. Estábamos en la anhelada espera
para hacernos a la mar y tener una navegación relati-
vamente confortable durante el trayecto de 60 millas
que nos separaban del Puerto de Progreso, rumbo al
maravilloso Arrecife Alacranes.
El Arrecife Alacranes es una gigantesca media luna
de coral de aproximadamente cien kilómetros cuadra-
dos de superficie, al que los corales lo convierten en
una fortaleza contra el constante viento del nordeste.
En el interior del arrecife, de 64 por 13 kilómetros, de
longitud y anchura, respectivamente, hay cuatro islas
y un islote.
Al igual que muchas islas del Caribe, el Arrecife
Alacranes es de formación reciente; las arenas de sus
islas son de color blanco amarillento, de grano grueso,
con fragmentos de conchas, algas y corales.
Las playas de arenas blancas y vegetación muy
verde, en su mayoría ocupadas por pájaros que ha-
cen sus nidos en la arena o en los arbustos, pero todo
esta ocupado y sus graznidos se escuchan a muchos
metros de distancia. Con esta imagen el viaje ya ha-
bía valido la pena, pero habíamos venido a conocer
sus fondos marinos y teníamos muy poco tiempo
para recorrer todo el arrecife. Con nerviosismo de

stars; we waited in silence for the radio
inside the Lucky Two announced that the
strong southern wind had calmed down. We were
eager to set out to sea and enjoy a rather com-
fortable journey for the 60 miles that awaited us
from the Port of Progress towards the Scorpion
Coral Reef.
The Scorpion Coral Reef is a gigantic, half-moon
shaped, coral reef approximately 100 km2 in size,
making the corals a natural fortress against the
northeastern winds. Inside the coral reef, 64 by 13
kilometer in length and width, respectively, are
four islands and one small island.
Similar to many islands in the Caribbean, the
Scorpion Coral Reef was only recently created; the
sand on its beaches are of a white-yellowish hue,
composed of large grains and fragments of algae,
shells and corals.
The beaches composed of white sand and rich
vegetation, in general, are occupied by species
of birds that form nest in the sands and bushes;
they island is almost entirely occupied by these
animals, and the sounds the produced could be
heard from many meters away. Admiring this im-
age had already made the trip worthwhile, but he
had come here to explore its oceans and we had
