other female, always wrapped around a cloud of ru-
mors andmystery, includingsmokeandmirrors,Mata
Hari’s legend remains fascinating and captivating.
Geertruida Margaretha Zelle, better known as
Mata Hari, was born in Leeuwarden, Holland on
August the 7, 1876, daughter of Adam Zelle Hat-
ter, nicknamed the Baron, for his delusions of
grandeur and extravagant habits.
Mata Hari means “Pupil of Dawn”, starting her
seductive reputation at fifteen years old in the Nor-
mal School of Lyden, where much of the time spent
there she lived under constant harassment from
the director of the institution, which used all meth-
ods to gain her favor, without success.
In1895anapplicationappearedinalocalnewspa-
per, theDutchofficer Rudolf “John”MacLeod searched
for a wife, she responded to the add due to the fact
that she felt a very strong attraction for the military,
hence one of hermost famous quotes, “I love themili-
tary, I have always loved them and I’d rather be the
mistress of a poor officer than of a wealthy banker “!
She married the same year to be pregnant with
her first daughter Louise and after a while moved
to the East Indies where she had her first contact
with the native dances of the continent.
Back in Amsterdam, in 1903 she obtained a di-
vorce alleging abuse from MacLeod’s behalf, since
John was devoted to a worldly life and alcoholism.

sigue siendo una leyenda fascinante y cautivadora.
Margaretha Geertruida Zelle, mejor conocida
como Mata-Hari, nació en Leeuwarden, Holanda el
7 de Agosto de 1876, hija del sombrerero Adam Ze-
lle, apodado El Barón, por sus delirios de grandeza
y extravagantes costumbres.
Mata-Hari que significa “Pupila de la Aurora”, ini-
cio su fama de seductora a los quince años de edad
en la Escuela Normal de Lyden, donde gran parte del
tiempo que pasó allí vivía bajo un acoso constante
por parte del director de la institución, que utilizaba
todos los medios para ganar su favor, sin éxito.
En 1895 apareció una solicitud en un periódico
local, el oficial holandés Rudolf “ John” MacLeod so-
licitaba esposa, respondió a esta porque sentía una
atracción muy fuerte por los militares, de ahí una de
sus mas celebres citas, “¡Amo a los militares, los he
amado siempre y prefiero ser la amante de un oficial
pobre que de un banquero rico!”
Contrajo matrimonio ese mismo año por estar
embarazada de su primera hija Louise, se trasladaron
a las Indias Orientales, ahí tuvo su primer contacto
directo con las danzas nativas del continente.
De vuelta a Amsterdam, en 1903 solicitó y consi-
guió el divorcio de MacLeod alegando maltrato, ya que
John se dedicó a la vida mundana y al alcoholismo.
