Winy Maas adoptó el enfoque como collage y
efectista que había utilizado en OMA a MVRDV. Tí-
pico de los edificios diseñados por esta firma, es su
inteligencia casi anecdótica. La esencia de su diseño
puede ser capturado en una sola frase. En Madrid,
por ejemplo, se construyó un piso con un agujero
en el centro. Un Boeing podía volar a través de ella
sin dañar el edificio.
MVRDV, éxito inmediato entre los estudiantes
de arquitectura, que van a copiar los mismos, hasta
la saciedad. Algunos de los edificios son muy intere-
santes, experimentales hasta el punto de exceso, y
se ven espectaculares, como el complejo de viviendas
Silodam, la vivienda protegida (WoZoCo) y el Lloyd
Hotel en Amsterdam. Sin embargo, son muy a me-
nudo abstractas y desnudas, como el ya mencionado
apartamento Mirador en Madrid, y el edificio Parkrand
en Amsterdam.
A veces una batalla estalla entre el maestro y
su alumno, por ejemplo en relación con el edificio
VPRO en Hilversum. Aquí Koolhaas acusó a MVRDV
de plagio, una discusión que rara vez se puede traer
a una conclusión satisfactoria. El conflicto terminó
indeciso y en una ráfaga de lenguaje abusivo. En
2009 la atención se fija en Winy Maas, porque era
uno de los diez arquitectos para ser elegidos por
el presidente francés Sarkozy para desarrollar una
visión de París en 2030.
Flat with a hole
Winy Maas took the collage-like and gimmicky
approach that he had used at OMA with him to
MVRDV. Typical of the buildings designed by this
firm is their almost anecdotal cleverness. The es-
sence of their design can be captured in a single
phrase. In Madrid, for example, they built a flat
with a hole in the middle. A Boeing could fly right
through it without damaging the building.
MVRDV scores hits that are an immediate suc-
cess among architecture students, who go on to
copy them, ad nauseum. Some of their buildings
are exciting, experimental to the point of excess,
and look spectacular, such as the Silodam housing
complex, the sheltered housing (WoZoCo) and the
Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam. But they are all too of-
ten abstract and bare, such as the aforementioned
El Mirador flat in Madrid, and the Parkrand building
in Amsterdam.
Sometimes a battle flares up between the mas-
ter and his pupil, for example regarding the VPRO
building in Hilversum. Here Koolhaas accused
MVRDV of plagiarism, a discussion that can rarely
be brought to any satisfactory conclusion. The con-
flict ended undecided and in a flurry of abusive lan-
guage. In 2009 attention was fixed on Winy Maas
because he was one of only ten architects to be cho-
sen by French president Sarkozy to develop a vision
for Paris in 2030.
