s Rem Koolhaas the Netherlands’ most impor-
tant architect? The question of who is the best
Dutch swimmer is easier to answer, as there
are at least objective rules for measuring that. Is
the number of buildings realised by Koolhaas the
deciding factor? In that case the title should go to
someone else. Yet the answer to our first question
remains a resounding yes.
No-one has had more impact on the following
generation, as well as the avant-garde, than Rem
Koolhaas (1944). Ex-employees copy and imitate
his way of working, both in the Netherlands and
all over the world. His architectural firm Office for
Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) has offices in Rot-
terdam, New York and Beijing. Koolhaas’s work is
characterised by a pure drive for freedom: to escape
from the constricting ethics of functional and ‘ra-
tional’ building. This attitude is also prompted by
pure stubbornness. And this is something you see
in those of his followers who have in the meantime
also become leading architects: Kees Christiaanse,
Willem-JanNeutelings andWinyMaas. Even though
some of them may have only worked for Koolhaas
for two years and have now been working indepen-
dently for twenty years, you can still see traces of
OMA in their considerable oeuvres. Since Maas’s re-
cent involvement in the future plans for Paris, his
international celebrity status has grown by leaps
and bounds.

portante arquitecto? La cuestión de quién es el
mejor nadador holandés es más fácil de respon-
der, ya que hay al menos reglas objetivas para medir
eso. ¿Es el número de edificios realizados por Koolhaas
el factor decisivo? En este caso, el título debe ir a al-
gún otro. Sin embargo, la respuesta a nuestra primera
pregunta es un sí rotundo.
Nadie ha tenido más impacto en esta generación,
así como el avant-garde de Rem Koolhaas (1944).
Ex-empleados copian e imitan su manera de trabajar,
tanto en los Países Bajos como en el mundo entero.
Su firma de arquitectos para: Arquitectura Metro-
politana (OMA) tiene oficinas en Rotterdam, Nueva
York y Beijing. La obra de Koolhaas se caracteriza por
una unidad pura de libertad: para escapar de la ética
constructiva de edificio funcional y “racional”. Esta
actitud también es impulsada por pura terquedad. Es
algo que se ve en sus seguidores, los cuales que tie-
nen la intención también de convertirse en arquitec-
tos principales: Kees Christiaanse, Willem-Jan Neu-
telings y Winy Maas. A pesar de que algunos de ellos
sólo han trabajado para Koolhaas durante dos años,
ahora han estado trabajando de forma independien-
te desde hace más de dos décadas. Se pueden ver
restos de OMA en sus considerables obras. Desde la
reciente participación de Maas en los planes futuros
para París, su condición de celebridad internacional
ha crecido a pasos agigantados.
