A poca profundidad
La isla está rodeada de una larga meseta arenosa de
poca profundidad por lo que se aconseja utilizar el barco
para acceder a los arrecifes que rodean la costa y a los
innumerables pecios que se encuentran reposando en-
tre ellos. Entre ellos destacamos los restos del carguero
alemán Antilla. Localmente se le conoce como el “barco
fantasma” y descansa sobre un fondo a 18 m de pro-
fundidad con una estructura poblada por diversidad de
organismos: enormes esponjas tubo, formaciones de
coral, langostas, peces ángel de cola amarilla. Es un pecio
que se presta a realizar alguna inmersión nocturna por la
escasa profundidad y la ausencia de corrientes. El Peder-
nales, a 10 m de profundidad, es un buque tanque tor-
pedeado por los alemanes, y sus grandes restos espar-
cidos entre las formaciones coralinas es el paraíso para
buceadores principiantes que disfrutarán con peces loro,
pargos, y cardúmenes de peces plateados. Algo pareci-
do sucede en el arrecife de la Bahía, con profundidades
que oscilan entre los 10 y 25 m donde el buceador poco
experimentado podrá deleitarse con corales cerebro y
esponjas anaranjadas, negras y azules. Otro tanto ocurre
con el Arrecife Arashi con profundidades de 10 a 12 m y
abundante coral cerebro, grandes corales estrella, peces
loro y hermosos peces ángel.
A shallow depth
The island is surrounded by a long shallow
sandy plateau so it is advisable to use the boat
to access the reefs surrounding the coastline
and the many wrecks that are resting between
them. These include the remains of the German
freighter Antilla shipwreck. Locally known as
the “ghost ship” which rests against a 18 m deep
structure populated by a diversity of organisms:
huge tube sponges, coral formations, lobsters,
yellow tail and angelfish. It’s a wreck that lends
itself to do some night dive by the shallow-
ness and lacks of currents. The Pedernales, 10
m deep, is a tanker torpedoed by the Germans,
and large debris scattered among the coral for-
mations is heaven for beginner divers who will
enjoy with parrotfish, snappers, and shoals of
silver fish. Something similar happens in the
Bay reef, with depths ranging between 10 and
25 m where the inexperienced diver may enjoy
brain corals as well as black, orange and blue
sponges. The same applies to the Arashi Reef
at depths of 10-12 m and abundant brain coral,
star fish, large corals and beautiful parrot or
angel fish.
